excerpt:
Before ascending to the temple, Namaari instructed Tuk Tuk to stay put in the palace stables. Given his size and the uncertainty of the circumstances, she wanted him to wait while she went to find Raya. If they could make it down from the mountain to the palace, he could take them somewhere safe away from the fighting. Raya kept her head high during the trek, but she shifted from merely holding Namaari’s hand to leaning into her. A light sheen of sweat swiped across her brows, and she breathed heavier than she should have for an active person descending. Whatever brought Raya back had its limits. She was clearly drained from what she went through. “I’m fine,” she protested with a huff, but followed it with a reassuring smile, when Namaari asked if she wanted a break. “Let’s just find Tuk Tuk and get down to the village, Dep la.” She frowned. “Raya, we need to leave. Your father—” “No.” Despite her exhaustion, she shook her head stubbornly. “We need to get to the bridge. It’ll be alright. Trust me.” “I—okay.”
