Blessing or Curse (Part 1)

As he was looking at himself in the mirror to shave slightly his beard, he couldn’t help but also checked his features. More than two years had passed since the confrontation where he was supposed to die. His face and his body stayed the same and didn’t change at all. A part of him was glad to be alive. However, the other part was dubitative about his new found immortality. His friends…Chris and Axel didn’t follow him yet in this path. They could still choose to become immortal or not while it was forced for him. Nevertheless, he didn’t blame his lover, she acted and did what she thought was right. And before he even met her, he was quite alone. He ran from his toxic family; he didn’t have any more attachment towards them. They were only focusing on getting richer, powerful and using him as a tool for success. He only wished for a simple life. And he finally got it. A simple delivery job, a simple nice place to live, his motorbike and his lover. But he had to admit that having the queen of the demons as his lover was quite the adventure life. His body still remembered what happened after the pyjama party…He didn’t mind. He understood from the start such relationship would be unusual, original and different. Plus, he was so in love with and he had any doubt about her romantic feelings as well. It was clear for him that she was looking for someone like him to fill her life with simplicity and honesty. She told him several times before that she never felt that free and incredible for a long time. It meant a lot from someone as eternal as Lilith; the queen of Hell. As he finished to clear his beard, he heard a knock at the front door. He cleaned himself, left the bathroom and opened the front door. No one was there but a letter was on the floor. He took it and could read it was from…his mother and his father. It was old-fashioned. It had been two years since he last saw her and even more for his father. And he made sure they couldn’t contact him through the social medias and his phone. Yet, he was wondering what was the content of the letter. He closed the door and sat on the couch of his living room. He opened the letter to read it.

Dear son,

You are a disappointment to our family. You were supposed to be the key to take control over our business. We were about to become incredibly powerful in the economic and political scenes. You had the potential to become the greatest of all. But you wasted it by running away so you could get your “simple life”. We still didn’t understand how you were able to pull out such a life without our help. In any case, you decided to leave us behind and we got that. This is why we send you this letter. We found a replacement. We will prepare them for greatness. We won’t fail this time. We ask you to not interfere. Your life belongs to you only. You are not our son anymore.

As soon as he finished to write the letter, he cringed and punched the wall. In the meantime, Lilith showed up because it was the end of a day. She noticed how angry Jeff was while he heard her entering the living room.

- Is everything alright sweetie? Are you angry because of the trap I set up after the pyjama party? (Lilith)

- What? No, it’s not about that. Just…read this. (Lilith)

He gave her the letter and she read it slowly and carefully. She kept having a stoic expression but Jeff could feel she was displeased by what she was reading.

- The Ravenblade. I kept an eye on them since the day I met you and dated you. I never did anything except observing them.  Between them and Archie’s family…the humans can be quite awful. (Lilith)

- You kept an eye on my family? (Jeff)

- We, divine beings, mustn’t play an active role in mortals’ lives. But recently, the universe is dealing with huge changes and we can’t keep staying passive.  Plus, I want my human lover to be happy and it can’t be achieved right now~ You want to save “your replacement” am I right? (Lilith)

- I think I know who that is. And I can’t let that happen. (Jeff)

He took back the letter from Lilith and sighed deeply.

- Even immortality will not prevent me from confronting the shadows of my past. Let’s end them. (Jeff)

- Now you remind me why I love you so much~ Let’s go together~ I promise that I will let you handle your family alone~ No divine protection from me~ (Lilith)

- That’s what I want. Thank you. (Jeff)

Lilith kissed his cheek and both prepared themselves to leave their house. They would take Jeff’s motorbike. Next destination: Jeff’s past.

Kiss Swain

Success relies on timing. Talon has to hold Swain’s attention long enough for Katarina to make a clean get away and then Talon has to vanish before Swain realizes how he’s been duped.Katarina’s the one who will have to get past several guards and layers of security to the locked files on Riven’s death but Talon thinks he has the harder job. If anything, their roles should be reversed. He can go invisible, he can cast Silence to temporarily disable spell locks - he’d have a much better chance at retrieving the proof that Riven still lives.  Despite that logic, Katarina insisted that he distract Swain and of course, Cassiopeia had sided with her. (Most of the time, the Du Couteau girls feel like his siblings. When they send him to do something too dangerous for them, they feel like Marcus’ daughters.) Talon comes in through the window, like always, and tosses an object wrapped in magic-suppressing fabric onto Swain’s desk. It’s a neat little talisman, something he picked up in a Shuriman market, that grants a temporary boost of speed to its wearer. Talking about it to Swain and haggling to sell it should distract the Grand General.Hopefully.Talon hates plans that rely on hope.When there’s a outbreak of yelling down the hallway and Swain half-rises from his chair, Talon’s first instinct is to stab the man. A dead Grand General can’t have his sister executed for treason....The rest of the Trifarix, however, can have him and Katarina both executed for treason if he kills Swain.Halfway through a lunge, he changes the motion into a vault and leaps over the desk. He lands on Swain’s lap, shining dragonblade angled away from him, and grabs a fistful of hair. He’s seen Cassiopeia do this far more often than he’s done it himself - when he yanks Swain into a kiss, it’s sloppy and hard, Talon biting down and then licking into the other’s mouth.Swain’s hard under him and not in the good way. His muscles are stiff with tension and Talon can feel how close he is being pushed off Swain’s lap. Desperation pushes him onward, makes him twist and writhe as he tries to find the right angle. It’s like picking a lock, isn’t it? If he just figures out the right approach, if he can calculate the right way to fit their mouths together...Magic flares around them, red and vicious, and Swain’s mouth is a beak that tears Talon’s lip open and sends blood spilling between them. The black hole-suck of energy hits Talon like a sword to the spine but he won’t back down. Swain may have transformed but he’s still here.As long as Swain’s here, Katarina still has a chance to escape.As long as Swain’s here, Talon’s still winning (and if he can’t get away afterwards, his sisters will have to live with the knowledge they chose this for him).

[Set in @not-the-lich‘s Conviction verse because I am being massively self-indulgent here.]The boy’s eyes are dead and flat. It’s the color that sets them apart from the eyes of the crows, blood instead of black, but they’re otherwise identical.Swain has seen eyes like that on corpses but corpses stare sightlessly at the sky. Corpses do not watch his every move as if waiting for him to fall.His crows watch Talon but all they ever see is Talon watching him. Swain watches Talon but all he ever sees is Talon watching him.“What is it, Talon?” Swain asks finally. The boy shrugs, unfolds himself gracefully and drops off his perch on the window. He moves like smoke curling into the air, slow and sinuous, and his eyes never leave Swain’s face.(It’s Ionia that’s done this, Ionia that’s poisoned Swain’s thoughts and made him so paranoid of even those closest to him. The boy he took in as a young teenager is older now, more dangerous, but still loyal to Swain. Talon has to be trustworthy. Swain has to trust him.) Talon’s within striking range now and Swain’s demon hand twitches at his side. Power’s gathering within him, ready to be unleashed, and the demon stirs in the back of his consciousness. Prey? Kill? it asks and Swain doesn’t say ‘no’.He says instead, ‘not yet’ and waits for Talon to make his move.When it comes, it’s too fast for Swain to react. He jerks his hand up, claws curled and glowing, but Talon has already pressed his lips to Swain’s and then dropped back down.Talon doesn’t move away. He stays there, too close to Swain, close enough that he has to tip his head back to look up into Swain’s eyes.“I didn’t take you in for this,” Swain says. quiet but firm, and watches the boy’s pretty mouth curve faintly upwards.“I know,” he says simply. “I wouldn’t have kissed you if you had.”

You mean Jeff's family? I don't know yet, I still need to develop that story arc when I will have the motivation and energy for it.

Determination

Swain no longer oversaw the boy’s practice. He’d been skilled enough. He’d had the boy work with his house’s master-at-arms and had hired a foreign bladesman and assassin to teach the boy a little polish, a little finesse.

The man and the woman were equally happy to teach a prodigy whatever they knew. Dealers in death respect one another sometimes, recognizing a fellow spirit that has no time for friendship but time enough for an unexpected kindness, perhaps. Perhaps they’d been ragged and lowly once as well.

And there was something to be said for doing things well, and doing things right. Especially in Noxus, forever under the rolling, cold eyes of the Kindred and their followers.

Swain had watched them work, now and then. He’d stood by the tower window and watched the figures far below. Tireless, all of them. And sometimes the boy had looked up- as if he’d sensed being watched or as if he often looked up to Swain’s window. And Jericho always stepped away and returned to his work.

The boy had killed a hundred times before when Swain sent him out with the first contract in his name. When Talon returned he was fast, faster than expected and hardly bloody at all.

“I did it.” There was something brittle, angry and expectant in the boy’s eyes. He waited for something. Approval? Disgust? Something else? Swain paused long enough to fix him with a frown.

He couldn’t help but smile ever so slightly. He reached out a hand a ruffled the boy’s hair, ignoring the moment of aggression and mistrust that shattered in the boy’s glassy eyes when the man reached for him, touched him and didn’t hurt him.

“Good job. There should be another soon.” Swain left it at that, and Talon only watched him, gathering the shards of mistrust, already gluing them back together to be shattered again and again until the sharp, fearful thing he expects is no longer the shape of what it once was.
