Character Development: Rory Williams

I have filled an entire excel sheet of character development info on each of my characters. I did have to modify the questions a little bit, though. So, here is Rory:

The Questions

The Answers:

1) His parents were abusive. His mother stopped acknowledging him when he was ten. This was about the time when he first had his ‘imaginary friend’ of another Rory, a Rory who could stand up for himself.

His father beat him regularly. He was in the hospital at least once a year from when he was 9 through when he was 17. He graduated high school early and hightailed it off to uni. He hasn’t spoken to his parents since.

2) As the Doctor always teases him about, it’s his nose. Rory doesn’t understand that. It’s a nose. They’re all very similar sizes. That’s why he’s partial to longer hair. He had long, loose hair as a child, and as an adult, he wore his hair in a ponytail throughout nursing school. When he gained his nursing license, he cut his hair, thinking it would be more professional.

3) Rory has too many scars. Luckily, there aren’t any where people can regularly see them. Granted, he wears a lot more long-sleeved shirts than others, but that’s to hide his shame. He only has one scar that wasn’t his parents’ fault. That one’s Amy’s fault. He never thought she would, but she did and that’s the straw that woke him up to what was happening to him.

4) Rory is the opposite of vain. In fact, the reason he ended up with Amy is because he just knew nobody would ever like him, and by some small miracle, she did. Jack is slowly building him a sense of self-worth though.

5) Rory’s always tried to be a zero because that’s what his parents wanted. But besides that one guy in nursing school, who he convinced himself he didn’t like, there’s only been Amy and Jack. Well, he’s had eyes for more women, but they never have eyes for him. And Jack, well, he’s special. He’s safe. And that’s exactly what Rory needs right now. Besides, he is kind of sexy and he actually likes Rory.

6) Rory’s happiest moment was when Jack said that Rory could trust him. Rory had never had someone who so openly wanted to help him. Or maybe his happiest memory was when the Doctor showed up to take him away from Amy. Nobody had been there for him before. It had always been the other way round.

7) Rory would like to erase more of his life than he’d like to keep. Choose any of the times he’s been beaten, put in hospital, died, been betrayed by someone he was supposed to love, or had his heart broken.

8) Rory rarely has listened to music. His parents used to listen to classical rock while they beat him. He’s trying to get over that, though. Rory likes the colour red. He likes plain, vanilla ice cream. Although, he likes soft-serve better. And for flowers, well, he could tell you what a rose or sunflower was, but that’s the extent of that.

9) Rory trusts Jack.This surprises absolutely no one. In fact, before they became lovers, Rory asked if he could put his trust in Jack. When Jack heard about what had happened to him, he’d felt bad and had offered himself as someone Rory could rely on and trust in. It was doing this that started Rory falling in love with him.

10) The Doctor showing up the first time, his wedding to Amy in which the Doctor showed up a second time, the Doctor showing up the third time to take him away from Amy are all turning points. A positive turning point was when he started to trust again, to trust Jack. But the biggest turning point is the first night Amy hit him. It wasn’t much that first time, he wasn’t expecting it, and one could argue that he deserved it, but looking back, it’s easy to see that was when his mind split back into two personalities.

11) Rory is capable of using advanced equipment he’s been trained on very well. He also figured out his very modern phone without instructions. He’s started to figure out the TARDIS with the Doctor’s help. His parents level of tech-savviness is banging the remote when it doesn’t work. Amy got driving lessons and still can’t drive. He’s not entirely sure how he came to be a bit above average at these things.

12) Rory hates sleeping with someone usually. Well, maybe only Amy. But that’s his sample size before Jack. He likes to curl up against Jack.

13) Rory doesn’t like extreme temperatures. Not that he’d dare complain. But he’d like it cool enough to wear sleeves to cover his scars, thank you very much.

14) Rory is neither. He’ll keep a normal day. Getting up not too early and going to bed not too late. He’s adapted to the late shift before, though.

15) Rory is close to the Doctor. He, and now she, never betrayed his trust. He’d like to stay very close to her.

16) Rory’s workspace has always had to be neat. Nursing requires it as much as his parents did. He doesn’t mind though.

17) Rory cooks very well. He hates it though. He’s always had to or he wouldn’t eat. And his parents wouldn’t eat. And then he’d get beaten. But he does enjoy making french toast for Jack.

18) Rory loves flying in the TARDIS. He hates traffic. And although he can’t fly it as well as he can drive a car, he can fly it as well as the Doctor.

19) Rory labours under the illusion that he has no worth. This leads to him fearing he has nobody to turn to when even his friends on Earth are more than willing.

20) Rory absolutely already travels through space and time. He isn’t really picky about where they go as long as it doesn’t hurt him.

21) More than anything, Rory thinks superstitions are a waste of time. Thinking critically about them makes the smoke and mirrors vanish. And although he’s bad at extrapolating to himself, he is good at critical thinking.

22) Right now, Jack is exactly what Rory needs. He’s safe, he’s trustworthy, and he’s patient. He’s someone willing to help build Rory back up while giving him enough space to figure things on his own if need be.

23) Rory's long fingers are worn, but not calloused

24) Comfort Food: French Toast

Vice: Rory gets embarrassed because he likes sex. He’s gotten the message that he’s not supposed to. He’s working on it. His main vice, though is that he has a tendency of getting jealous over other’s good fortunes.

Outfit: shirt, vest, jeans/roman things

Hot Drink: coffee

Time of Year: autumn

Holiday: halloween

25) Sometimes, Rory feels like he’s lost his life. He’s lost the easy ability of most to love and trust. It’s been beaten out of him.

26) Undoubtedly, Rory’s life would be a tragedy. He keeps trying, but for all his heart, he cannot control the circumstances that lead him to mostly ill fortune.

27) Working in a hospital, Rory has never been allowed to wear anything scented or wash in scented soap or shampoo. Some patients are highly allergic to that. So he smells of himself, slightly masked by the cleansers taking away his scent. After a shift, he also tends to smell of antiseptic.
