Several records fell in Qatar late last week as swimmers from around the globe descended on Doha for the first leg of the FINA 2014 Swimming World Cup.
Hungarian Katinka Hosszu stole the show at the Hamad Aquatic Center, capturing five medals and setting a new world record time of 4:20.83 in the 400-meter event.
She also bested the world record in the 100-meter individual medley (previously held by Hosszu) with a new time of 57.25.
Qatar expat Ray Toh attended the tournament and snapped several photos of the action.
Some 900 swimmers will be back in Doha in early December when Qatar hosts the 25-meter World Swimming Championships.

Qatar resident Ray Toh, who has been on a nature kick and recently visited Irkaya Farm, has also just spent some time photographing wildlife in Qatar’s desert.
When asked about the experience, Toh, who went near the Saudi-Qatar border with a friend he called an expert on the local environment, told Doha News:
“It was amazing as many residents here think that Qatar is a boring place without much life. They just have to explore, as there are many hidden treasures.”
He added, “Qatar has no zoo now but Qatar is like a safari, if you explore the desert.”
His advice for would-be explorers includes devising a plan by looking at Google Maps and other online resources; packing enough food and water for the trip; and then driving to the desert.
For those who want to dive further into the experience, Toh suggests night vision glasses – his expert friend told him they can help to identify footprints of foxes, rats and birds in the desert.

Hoping to take some photos of Qatar’s wildfire, photographer Ray Toh spent some time this week at Irkaya Farm, which is known for the presence of many species of birds.
Irkaya is a private farm located some 50km west of Abu Samra Road in the center of Qatar. According to a recently released book by the Ministry of Environment, 238 out of 315 bird species in Qatar have been spotted at the farm.
However, Toh said his bird-watching efforts were not very successful, as the season for catching glimpses of the various species appears to be during the cooler months.
In addition to birds, the farm’s many types of reptiles, insects and flora are just beginning to be explored, the MOE has said.
Irkaya is also home to different types of farming techniques. Included in Toh’s photographs is a view of the farm’s center pivot irrigation system, which waters plants in a circular pattern.
