"No one is happier to see you than me. You can be sure of that, my dear (y/n)."
The smile he gives you is dazzling. Sunlight across a garden of roses. Ruby eyes crinkle with mischief, and then Ray is upon you, one arm around your shoulders, face nuzzling into your hair like you're a long lost friend. The light, minty scent of his aftershave tickles your nose, oddly comforting as he keeps you pressed to his side. Everything about him is comforting, you muse, that confident grin, his strong shoulders, and his warmth against you.
"Did you hear that, Acey-kins?" Ray's voice is honey and spice as he smirks at his brother, "Our little guest likes me better than you."
Ace looks as excited as a wet firecracker as he runs both hands down his face. He inhales deeply, sharply, filling his lungs with patience and pushing all thoughts of fratricide out of his head. "That's not what I heard, you geriatric fossil," Ace throws the man next to you a half-assed glare, then his eyes find yours. For a split-second, hesitation flashes across his boyish features. He purses his lips, then looks away.
"Whatever. I don't care," Ace pushes his hands down his pockets and shifts his weight from one foot to the other. "S'not like we're dating anyway," he mutters, and you're not sure you and Ray were meant to hear. He's pouting, shoulders stiff, eyes to the floor as he hides from you.
None of that. You shrug off Ray's hug and step to Ace's side, wrapping your arms around one of his. His body freezes, like a frightened animal caught in the headlights, and he finally looks at you properly, eyes wide and cheeks flushed. "Wha—what's with you all of a sudden?!" His ears redden and a scoff runs past his lips, but he doesn't shrug you off.
He leans in instead, pinning you down with a stare. His red eyes are darker than usual. "I told you, I don’t care. You want my attention that bad?" Butterflies scatter in your stomach as he whispers, enunciating every word like he's engraving them directly into your brain. Your head empties and all you can do is nod, hoping he won't notice the way your legs quiver under the pressure of his proximity.
He does.
A grin on his lips, Ace turns towards Ray. “Something tells me you’re not the favorite this time, brother."
