Chapter Ten
Gabrielle
“Wait hold on,” I put my hand chuckling at what Kira just said. “You’re what?”
“Pregnant,”
“You’re pregnant? Really? Wow, I don’t know if I should scream for joy or be worried about you.”
“What do you mean? Why would you be worried?”
“I mean, I’m happy you guys moved in this new house and you’re both doing well but isn’t this a little quick?”
“What do you mean?”
“Nick hasn’t been working at this new job for too long and y’all have already moved. He’s bought you a diamond bracelet; you guys have all this new furniture. Doesn’t that seem odd to you?”
“He says he’s really cool with his boss, Mello helped him get the job. I thought you would be happy that we moved with how much you used to hate our other place.”
“I am happy you moved, I’m just asking about what’s going on. You’re about to be a mommy,” I smiled at her. “Yay, I have somebody to spoil. I hope it’s a girl.”
“Me too, I don’t need a mini Nick running around here. So you’re happy for us?”
“Yes, I don’t like Nick too much but it is what it is. I just hope everything is as it seems.”
“It is, I trust him.”
“Okay,” I shrugged.
I wanted to tell Kira what I really thought about the situation but with her being pregnant she doesn’t need to freak out and overreact. Was I happy that she was out of that raggedy apartment and in a new place? Yes, she deserved this house but I don’t know about any job paying this well right off the bat.
Where I’m from the only way niggas getting a lot of money so quick is if he’s moving drugs. I would like to think Nick is too smart for that but look who is cousin is, it wouldn’t be hard for Mello to get him in on that shit. I hope that’s not what it is but my instincts are telling me Nick is selling drugs.
We sat there talking for a few minutes more before Nick came walking in the living room with Barry right behind him. “Hey babe,” Nick said to Kira before he kissed her on the cheek.
“Hi, what are y’all doing here?” She asked him.
“I gotta change for work; I’m probably going to be home late. I’ll call you and let you know.”
“Alright, be careful.”
“I’m always careful.” When he walked out I started gathering my things.
“Where are you going?” Kira asked me looking confused.
“Dinner with my parents tonight,” I shook my head. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“Alright, call me afterwards.”
“I will, later Kira.” I got up and walked out to my car. Before I could open the door to my car I felt my arm being grabbed. I turned to see Barry was the one grabbing me. “What?” I asked after taking my arm out of his grip.
“So you and Mello?”
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me,” He chuckled. “I knew that too good for the hood act was just a front.”
“Listen, what I do and who I do it with isn’t your business. Oh and the next time your buddy up there wants to gossip about me tell him he might want to keep his mouth shut because he’s the one lying to his wife every day.”
“What are you talking about?”
“What security job pays this much? What security job hires people without a license or the proper training? None that I know of, he’s moving drugs just like his cousin. I know he is.”
“So what are you going to do? Tell Kira?”
“No I’m not going to tell Kira, I don’t want her losing her mind while she’s pregnant you just tell your buddy people can only lie for so long so he might want to get his story straight. She’s naïve to this street shit but she’s not dumb she’s going to catch on eventually. Bye now Barry,” I got in my car then hurried up and pulled off.
The nerve of that nigga trying to check me about my personal business, he’s just salty he never got a chance to get with me. That’s the whole reason he even invited me to that party. I wasn’t even going to go that night until I saw the address and I immediately knew it was at Mello’s house. That’s the only reason I went, I wanted to see if he had changed any and unfortunately he hasn’t. Wait no, I’m wrong he has changed. He’s more of a jerk than he was before. I don’t even know why I expected anything different from him.
Carmello and I have a pretty rocky and weird history. I met him my junior year of high school. I’ll never forget that day because I was stuck on him ever since then.
Flashback
“Ma I’m on my way home right now just give me the card and I’ll go to the store.” I told my mother over the phone as I was walked down the street. “Okay, see you in a minute.” I hung up then put my phone in my pocket.
Just as I was turning the corner I felt my arm being grabbed. I snatched away and looked at who was touching me. “Mike didn’t I tell you to stop touching me?”
“Damn, why you so damn mean? I’m just trying to talk to you.”
“We don’t have shit to talk about, especially not on this corner. Fuck is wrong with your brain?”
“You know what, you think you hot shit cause your father works for that Watson nigga, you still live around here bitch and if you not careful that won’t be for too long.”
“Did you just threaten me?”
“Take it how you want,”
“I’ll take it how you said it, don’t be mad because I don’t want you. Get over it, and my father’s job has nothing to do with it. It has everything to do with you not being about shit so bye.” I went to walk away but he snatched my arm and pulled me back.
“Who the fuck you think you talkin to bitch! I’ll blow your head off right here!” He shouted in my face.
“Aye Mike! Let her go fuck is wrong with you!” Somebody yelled at him. He sucked his teeth then let my arm go, as soon as he did I slapped the shit out of him.
“Don’t you ever in your life put your dirty ass hands on me like that again!” I went to swing again but was pulled back.
“Whoa, wait a minute baby chill out.” I looked up to see who was grabbing on me, I was ready to curse them the fuck out but I had to pause when I saw him. He was fine as hell, the finest nigga I’ve seen around here. He was tall, light skin, skin full of tattoos, and a beard that was line up to perfection. All in all he was sexy as hell. “Move on Mike,” He told him, then Mike and all of his dumb ass friends walked off.
“Thanks,” I told the mystery man as I moved myself out of his grip.
“No problem beautiful, what’s your name?”
“Gabrielle,”
“Gabby?”
“I guess it’s the same thing,” I shrugged. “What’s your name?”
“I go by Mello, you know I’m not mad that you stick up for yourself but you gotta be careful. It’s a lot of niggas out here who don’t have shit to lose, they’ll really hurt you.”
“I know but I can’t just let disrespect slide, that’s not my thing.”
“How old are you?”
“17,”
“17? You’re a baby,”
“I’m not a baby,”
“You are a baby.” He chuckled. “When do you turn 18?”
“June 2nd.”
“That’s in three months, I’ll see you then.”
“See me? You don’t even know where to find me.”
“Don’t worry about it, I have my ways baby girl. Go home before those niggas come back around here aight.” He smiled at me then got in a black Camaro and drove off. Confused as hell I just decided to walk the rest of the way home.
Flashback Over
Mello definitely kept his promise about seeing me again. He pulled up in front of my door on my birthday; thankfully both of my parents were at work so they didn’t see him. I didn’t know what he wanted or why he came but for whatever reason I didn’t really care to ask. I just went along with whatever he said. He took me shopping, took me to the movies then took me out to eat. At the end of the night he brought me back to his place and we just chilled out. He didn’t even make a move on me, I actually made the first move and that’s how he became my first.
After that day I was with Mello damn near every day for the whole summer up until one day shit went completely wrong. We were in the living room watching TV when there was some loud bangs on the door. He got up to go see who it was by peeking out the door and it was the police. When he told me it was the police I got up and ran out the back door and down the alleyway. I guess I picked a good time because they didn’t even have police in the back.
From what I was told by people who saw everything was they knocked the door off the hinges and busted in his place. Mello ended up getting arrested but because he was smart enough to never keep shit in his house they couldn’t keep him for anything so he was able to go. Unfortunately somebody, I don’t know who told him it was me and my family that called the cops on him so he basically wrote me off. I’m not going to lie, with me running the way I did it did make me look like I had something to do with it but that wasn’t the case. My father didn’t even know I was seeing Mello so why would he call the cops on him?
I wanted him to know it wasn’t me but whenever he saw me he played my ass to the left, then we ended up moving away and I never looked back. I mean, why would I look back? What did that environment do for me? It didn’t help me in anyway, it didn’t build me up in anyway so I don’t know why people always try and act like I’m wrong for not being proud of being from there. What’s so damn good about growing up broke? Nothing, so why am I wrong for not wanting anything to do with it.
Even when it comes down to Mello, he’s still there. He can afford to move but he just chooses to stay there, I have no idea why but it’s on him. I want him to really open his eyes and know he could have more but he doesn’t want to see that. He’s comfortable with being a kingpin and I want no parts of it. If he can’t better himself and build a better life for himself why should I stick in there? Nothing good will come from what he’s doing and I don’t want to be dragged down when that life turns on him, cause it will.
…
Walking into my parents dining room I got confused when I saw them sitting at the table with another man and woman and a guy that looked to be about my age. I know damn well they are not doing what I think they’re doing.
“Hey,” I said making my presence known. “What’s going on?”
“Oh Gabby come here,” My mother said so I walked over to her. “This is Damon and his wife Adrienne Carter. Damon was the governor of Delaware a few years back.”
“Oh okay, it’s nice to meet you.” I smiled shaking both of their hands. “If I knew it would be guest here I would’ve dressed more appropriately. I had classes today.” I looked down at the very basic outfit I had on, if I knew people were going to be around I would’ve changed.
“You look fine; Gabby is a senior at Howard.” My father smiled proudly.
“Brandon was thinking about going there but he opted for Morehouse. He graduated two years ago.” Adrienne said. “Oh I’m sorry this is our son Brandon.” This Brandon guy stood up and held his hand out so I shook it. I’m not even going to lie he was fine as hell, but the fact that my parents invited them and didn’t tell me was irking the hell out of me.
“Well sit down,” My mother told me. I took my jacket and put it on the back of my chair before I took a seat. The whole dinner consisted of my parents and Brandon’s parents talking about business and politics. All that boring bullshit, I wanted to get up and leave and I could tell Brandon felt the same way I did.
By the time dinner was over I was ecstatic because that meant I was finally able to take my ass home. I was over this boring dinner, I just wanted to go to sleep. “Well I hate to eat and run but I need to go.” I told my parents.
“You know what, I do too. I have some more moving to do.” Brandon stood up and said.
“Oh yes, Brandon just moved in a condominium on Pennsylvania Ave.” His mother said.
“I like over that, did you drive?” I asked him.
“Actually I rode with my parents, you wouldn’t mind giving me a ride right?”
‘No it’s fine, come on.” I hugged my parents then smiled and told his parents good bye then we left out. Once we were in the car and on the road I looked at Brandon. “Um did you know about that?”
“You mean meeting you?” He chuckled. “Nope, not until like two minutes before you walked in. I should’ve been man, hell I would’ve been if I wasn’t used to them trying to set me up.”
“Well that was my first go around at the set up thing, now I see why my friend used to complain all the time. It’s awkward.”
“You get used to it after a while.”
“I don’t think I ever want to get used to that.” The rest of the ride home was pretty alright, we talked about random things like what was playing on the radio or whatever. Turns out he’s really nice and cool; it’s refreshing to meet a guy that my parents know that’s not as dull as paint.
After parking my car we both got out and made our way towards the entrance. “I can’t believe we live in the same building, that’s kind of funny.” I told him after chuckling.
“It really is, what are the odds?”
“I don’t know, but it was nice to meet you Brandon.”
“You too, um I know this is kind of forward but can I get your number?”
“My number?”
“Yeah,” He smiled before I could answer I felt a pair of arms go around my waist from behind.
“Sorry bro, she’s already taken.” I turned my head slightly to see Mello was the one with his arms wrapped around me.
“Oh, I didn’t know you had a boyfriend. It’s cool I wasn’t even trying to step on your toes man.” Brandon told Mello. “I’ll guess I’ll see you around Gabrielle.” Brandon gave me a small smile then went inside.
“Carmello, what the hell are you doing here? Let me go,” I moved his arms from around me then faced him. “How did you even know I lived here?”
“Come on now Gab, you know I got my ways.” He smirked at me. “So who was that nigga?”
“Why?”
“I wanna know,”
“Well Joe, I don’t give a damn what you wanna know.” I rolled my eyes then went inside the building with him right behind me. He actually followed me all the way to my condo, when we got inside he looked around nodding his head.
“Alright little miss rich girl got a nice ass spot.”
“Shut up,” I dropped my bag on the couch then sat down. “I don’t appreciate you just popping up over here then lying.”
“What did I lie about?”
“I’m not taken so I don’t appreciate you blocking.”
“You are taken, I don’t know why you just won’t admit that shit.”
“There’s nothing to admit oh and why did you tell Nick any of my business.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Barry approached me today about you, calling himself trying to check me. Why are you running off at the mouth, I know Nick told him and that means you told Nick.”
“I didn’t tell Nick a damn thing; he guessed it and I didn’t deny it. Unlike you I don’t see the point in lying about the shit I do.”
“Oh really? You don’t lie?”
“Nope,” He answered plopping down right next to me.
“Alright so answer this, why is Nick selling drugs for you.”
“What?” He looked at me confused.
“What?” I mocked him. “Nick is selling drugs for you. I’m not Kira; I know that security job is a bunch of bullshit. Why would you let him get in on that bullshit Mello?”
“Man they needed the money,” He shook his head visibly annoyed that I know. “You can’t tell her shit,”
“I’m not going to tell her, I don’t want her going insane while she’s pregnant. You shouldn’t have let him do that shit, he could’ve done something different.”
“Like what? He’s not like you alright he graduated and couldn’t find the job. He doesn’t have the luxury of running to mommy and daddy to help him get bye until he found a good he had to do what he had to do.”
“That’s bullshit and you know it. You know what I don’t get, why do you like playing stupid?”
“How the fuck am I playing stupid Gabby? A stupid nigga can’t make the money I make.”
“Yeah but a stupid nigga can get locked the fuck or killed. I know you’re smart Mello, if you can cut it sell it have a bunch of other people sell it and do all of this bullshit that means you’re actually smart enough to run a legitimate business.”
“You say that like they’re just handing out businesses where I’m from.”
“I know they’re not but I do know that you’re not helping yourself either. Invest in yourself, start a business. Turn your money legal because I can promise you once the cops catch up to your ass the money you have now will be useless. Can’t post bail with drug money.”
“Why are you always bringing this shit up?”
“I bring it up because you need to do something, how long do you think this street is going to last before the rug is pulled from under your feet? I don’t want anything happening to you,”
“Oh so you do care about a nigga?” He smiled making me smile back.
“I do, I hate that I do but I do. I need for you to make some changes Mello.”
“I’ll think about it, fuck all that though who was that nerd ass nigga you were with?”
“He’s the son of somebody who’s friends with my parents. I went to dinner they were there,” I shrugged. “Why are you questioning me, you’re not my man.”
“You keep saying that, we both know what it is Gabby.”
“Yeah sure, okay whatever you say Mello.”
“About time you got the program.”
Kira
Walking up to the table I smiled seeing my parents. As much as they get on my nerves I actually do miss them, it’s weird but I’m just going to blame my emotions on my pregnancy.
“There she is,” My dad smiled at me while he stood up. He hugged me then my mother did the same thing. I sat down in my seat with a big smile on my face. “You look beautiful baby girl.”
“Thank you, I’m glad you guys wanted to have dinner with me.”
“Well it’s been a long time since we’ve spoken and I miss you.” My mother said.
“I know I missed you guys too. You have to come by the house, Nick and I moved.”
“Did you? Well maybe we will come by. Speaking of Nick, where is he?” My dad asked.
“He had to work, he wanted to come but he couldn’t get out of it.” The waiter came over and took our orders then walked away.
“How is school coming Kira?”
“It’s fine, my last year I’m happy it’s almost over.” I chuckled.
“What are you going to do once you graduate?”
“Well, I’ve been doing some makeup jobs lately so I want to go to beauty school after I graduate so I can get certified.”
“You’re going to graduate, have a degree only to turn around and go to beauty school?” My mother looked at me confused.
“Yes, I like doing makeup. If it doesn’t work out I’ll always have my degree to fall back on. Listen I have plans, I know what I’m doing I just need you two to understand that.”
“We do baby girl but we want you to have the best life possible.” My father said.
“I understand but it’s my life so I should be able to do whatever I want with it. You raised me right, I’m not dumb I know what I’m doing.”
“Alright you’re an adult you’re going to make your own decisions but I do want you to know if you ever need anything don’t hesitate to come to us. Alright?”
“I know dad, thank you.” I smiled at him. Once our food came we ate while making small talk then ordered desert after we were done with dinner. The more time that past the more nervous I got, I was here really to tell my parents that I was pregnant but I was scared about how they would react. The last thing I want right now is a lecture.
“Kira, do you hear me?” My mother asked after she grabbed my hand knocking me back into reality.
“Huh? I’m sorry I was thinking about something.”
“Thinking about what? You look bothered.” She asked with a look of concern on her face.
“Well, I missed you guys so I wanted to have dinner with you because of that but it’s not the only reason.”
“Alright, what is it?”
“I’m um…I’m going to have a baby.”
“Excuse me?” My father questioned looking at me like I had two heads.
“I’m pregnant.” I went in my purse and pulled out the ultrasound picture and gave it to them.
“Kira, really? You haven’t even graduated school yet and you’re pregnant? How are you going to support a baby?” My mother said.
“Mother, Nick has a job and I’m working too. We’ll be fine, listen if you’re mad about this and want to give me a speech I don’t really care about hearing at the moment let me know now so I can walk away and keep my sanity.”
“We’re not mad Kira we’re just surprised. We didn’t expect this.” My dad replied. “Do you think you’re ready to be a mother?”
“Well ready or not it’s happening, I know it’s soon.”
“Soon is an understatement dear,” My mother told me. “Listen I’m not angry I always hoped you would gave me grand babies one day but Kira, you’re not even living your life to your full potential.”
“What do you mean?”
“When is the last time you’ve went to a college game, do you have friends outside of Gabrielle? What do you do for fun?”
“Um…I…I don’t know.”
“Exactly my point, you paused your life for that boy and now you’re about to press stop because you’re pregnant. You need to think this through.”
“You want me to have an abortion?”
“No, that’s not what I’m saying honey.”
“Kira what your mother is saying is you don’t seem happy in your life. Now I know you say you love Nick and if that’s what it is fine but I want you to be happy and you don’t seem that way. Are you happy?”
“I’m fine dad,”
“I didn’t ask if you were fine, I asked if you were happy.”
“I don’t know,” I mumbled. “Don’t get me wrong I love Nick, I do I love him more than anything but it’s just…I don’t know.”
“We know you love him but you have to love yourself more baby girl. If you’re not happy and he’s not making you or letting you be happy then you guys have to fix that.”
“I understand,”
My parents were actually very right and I didn’t want to admit it but I couldn’t even lie. I wasn’t really happy, I was content and my love for Nick doesn’t let me get down about anything because I know he’s trying but when is happy really going to step in? When we first got married I was the happiest girl in the world, broke and all but now it’s like it’s not about us anymore it’s about him providing. I love that he’s working his ass off to provide but its like things are just different now. Nick and I definitely have some things to discuss about our relationship.
Chapter Eight
Kira
“You know you didn’t have to come with me if you don’t feel good right? I could’ve come by myself then picked you up from home. I’m just picking up some sneakers.” Nick told me while we walked through the mall.
“I’m fine, this ginger ale is working. You just need to hurry up; my doctor’s appointment is in two hours.”
“You sure you good? You were throwing up all damn morning.”
“I’m fine, I’m about to go to Sephora you go do whatever it is you need to do.”
“Aight,” He kissed me on my cheek then walked off.
I opened my bottle of Canada Dry ginger ale and took a swig. I was about to done with this bottle and would need another one right after this is finished. I’ve been drinking since we got in the house last night. I couldn’t even get through half my meal without it coming back up and the same thing happened this morning. The only thing I can keep down is ginger ale, water wasn’t even helping me.
“Damn stomach hurts,” I mumbled as I made my way to Sephora. I looked around for a few minutes and picked a couple of things out. I was about to go to the register until I saw a young girl who couldn’t be any older than eighteen attempting to put foundation on but she was doing a bad job.
Chuckling I walked over to her. “You’re doing that kind of wrong.” I told her. She sucked her teeth then looked at me.
“Really?”
“Yeah, you’re not blending it you’re just wiping it on your face.”
“I need to learn how to do this,”
“Why? What’s the occasion?”
“First date,”
“Really? Well then you want to look extra pretty.”
“Obviously I’m not if I can’t figure this out. I watched YouTube videos.”
“Well some of those are good but you need at home help too. I can show you a few tricks if you want me to.”
“You would? Wait how do I know you know what you’re doing?”
“I do my own makeup every day, and if you’re not convinced yet. I’m really sick right now, like puking all over the place kind of sick.”
“Really? You can’t even tell.”
“The power of makeup, you want me to help you or not?”
“Yeah please,”
“Alright well first let’s get your correct color and get this stuff off of your face.” Together we found the right makeup for her face then I applied it using all the sample stuff they let you use while you’re trying stuff on in the stores.
It took me about thirty almost forty-five minutes to finish her makeup completely. “I’m done,” I led her to the mirror and she smiled.
“Oh my God! Thank you so much, you did such a good job.”
“You’re welcome,” I smiled at her. “You knock that boy out on your date okay.”
“I will but wait this is so weird but my sister is having her sweet sixteen next week and we have yet to find a makeup artist.”
“Oh, I’m not certified.”
“You’re not?” She asked looking confused. “Well that doesn’t matter, you still know what you’re doing. Do you think you could do makeup for eight people? We’ll pay you of course.”
“Um…I don’t know I’m not really used to doing makeup on a lot of people.”
“You do know what you’re doing though, it’s either you do it or my sister is going to look like a clown because she has no clue either. I don’t want to attempt anything. Please?”
“Alright give me your number or something.” I pulled my phone out and exchanged information with her then went to get the stuff I had to put back earlier when I helped her and paid for it. Just as I was walking out the store Nick was about to come in.
“There you are, I was calling you.” He said after giving me a peck on the lips.
“My phone is on silent I forgot to turn it back up; did you get your sneakers?”
“Yeah and I got yours too,”
“Thanks, oh guess what happened.” I told him as we started walking towards the exit.
“What?”
“When I was looking around right I saw this girl trying to do her makeup. Babe she didn’t know what she was doing at all. I helped her do her whole face and after I was finished she said her sister is having a sweet 16 and they don’t have a makeup artist.”
“Okay, and? I’m missing the point babe.” He chuckled.
“She wants me to do it, and I’ll get paid for it.”
“So it’s a job basically.”
“Basically,” I shrugged.
“I don’t know,” He shook his head.
“Here we go, what’s the problem Nick.”
“You know how I feel about you working. I want you concentrated on school.”
“Okay and I am, but if I get a job offer I should be able to take it. You have a problem with my father offering me a job now here comes another that has nothing to do with my dad and you still got an issue.”
“I want you to focus on school, you don’t need a job. I got us I told you that.”
“This isn’t about me needing it, you know I like makeup. I live for makeup actually, now somebody wants to pay me to do it.” We walked out the door then crossed the street to the parking lot.
“Like I said I don’t know Kira,” He said. I stopped dead in my tracks shaking my head.
“It’s a good thing I don’t need your permission.” When I said that he turned around and looked at me.
“What?”
“You heard what I said,”
“I don’t think I did. We said we would always talk and compromise about everything.”
“Yes we need to compromise Nick but you don’t do that. You dictate, I’m supposed to do everything you want me to do then stay back away from the things you say no to. I let you make me turn down an $18 an hour paying job. I’m not going to listen to you this time.”
“So it’s just fuck what I say?”
“No but you’re not being fair. You shut down everything I say and act like I’m supposed to just be okay with it. I didn’t marry you and leave my family just to get bossed around. If I wanted my actions dictated to me I could’ve stayed at my parents.”
“Well you know what Kira, go ahead and go back to your parents then.”
“What?” I looked at him like he was losing his mind. Go back to my parents? What does that even mean?
“I’m trying to take care of you and you’re complaining then throwing your parents up in my face? For what?”
“I’m just speaking the truth, you’re just mad that it’s not what you want to hear.” I rolled my eyes then walked towards the car only for him to grab my arm and put his keys in my hand.
“Go to your parents’ house I’ll see you,”
“What? What about my doctor’s appointment.”
“You’re grown you can go by yourself.” He turned and started walking off.
“Nick really?” He didn’t even say anything he just kept walking. Sucking my teeth I went to the car and got in slamming the door. “Such an asshole,” I sat there for a few minutes to see if he would come back but he didn’t so I just started the car and drove out the parking lot. If he wants to be childish he can be that, I really don’t give a damn.
Nick
I paced around Mello’s living room trying to calm myself down but it really wasn’t working too well. I was still pissed off about my argument with Kira. She just doesn’t get it, I’m busting my ass out here and she doesn’t even appreciate the shit.
“You need to calm the fuck down, why you so damn mad about the girl wanting a job?” Mello asked me.
“I’m not mad at that, I’m mad at what she said.”
“Oh you mean when she told the truth about you controlling her ass? Oh okay,” He shook his head letting out a light chuckle. “Nick, bruh you wrong.”
“I’m wrong for wanting to take care of my wife? How the fuck does that work?”
“You wrong for trying to control her, she’s your wife nigga not your child. Calm the fuck down and get your mind on this money. Heather and her friend about to come over here.” Hearing that name I paused and looked at him confused.
“For what?”
“She made some drops for me so she’s bringing my money with her friend.” He said just as the doorbell rang. “There they are right there, answer the door.” I went over to the door and answered it. When I saw Heather standing there a smile came on my face.
“Fuck is you smiling at?” She asked before pushing past me with her friend right behind her. “What’s good Mello?” She smiled then gave him a hug.
“Oh this nigga gets a hug but I got attitude? Okay I see how you do.” I said and she laughed then came over to me. We hugged then I let her go and kissed her cheek.
“What’s up Nick, how’s Karen?” She asked with a smirk on her face.
“Her name is Kira; of course you knew that though. She’s good, she’s at home.”
“Yeah that’s a good place for her to be. You still lookin good,”
“You too,” I smiled looking her up and down. Heather is bad as fuck, that shit is just undeniable. I know I shouldn’t be looking at her too hard being that I’m married but I couldn’t even help it. Don’t get me wrong, my wife is beautiful. Hell Kira is fucking gorgeous but Heather just exuded sex appeal.
“Stop staring at me nigga, this shit aint yours no more. Pick that lip and go look at your wife.” Heather said and I waved her off.
“Shut up and get your ass in that basement and unload this money.”
“Give me some help,” She turned around. Laughing I slapped her ass, she bit her lip smiling then walked to the basement door. “Let’s do this I got shit to do.” She and her friend walked down stairs and I was smiling until I felt a slap go across my neck.
“Ow nigga what the fuck?” I asked glaring at Mello.
“Yo stupid ass is married or did you forget? Don’t let Heather fuck your head up.”
“I’m not muthafucka you aint have to hit me either.”
“It got you back to reality though.”
“Whatever, what’s good with this bottle after we count this shit though?”
“Oh that’s definitely happening. Come on,” We went down to the basement to help Heather and her friend count up everything. As soon as my feet hit the basement floor my phone was ringing. I knew by the “On the Run” ringtone it was Kira but I didn’t answer. I went in my pocket pressing the volume down button then sat down.
After we counted up all the money Mello put the shit up then we all headed out to get a few bottles before heading back to Mello’s place. We all got fucked up, I wasn’t so gone that I wouldn’t remember anything but I was definitely happy I didn’t have to worry about driving.
Mello dropped me off in front of my building then I headed upstairs to my apartment. The whole time I was walking down the hall I was happy and praying we were getting the fuck out of here in a few weeks. I was tired of this little ass apartment, I can’t wait to get in our new house.
It took me a few minutes to figure out which key was the right one because my head was spinning a little too much at the moment. I got the door open after a few minutes then walked inside. To my surprise Kira was sitting on the couch looking at TV.
“Hey baby, I didn’t know you were still up.” I told her while I went in the kitchen and opened the fridge.
“How? I called you I don’t know how many times. Oh that’s right you didn’t pick up. What were you doing that was so important Nick?”
“I was with my cousin, we was chillin and shit.”
“Chillin? This long? You just walked in here at almost four in the morning and all you got for me is you was chillin? Are you serious?”
“I’m dead serious, call him if you don’t believe me.”
“It’s not about believing you Nick, it’s about respect and right now it’s clear you don’t respect me like you should.”
“Kira, baby I’m tired I’ve been drinking and I don’t feel like doing this bullshit.”
“It’s not bullshit you couldn’t come with me to my appointment but you could go get pissy drunk? What is wrong with you?”
“What is wrong with you Kira? All you do is complain.”
“Oh really?”
“Yes really, I told you I was going to take care of you and I’m doing that. It’s not good enough for you though.”
“I don’t complain and it’s good enough I just want to do some things too. You think it’s fun sitting in here by myself most days? I’m graduating in May baby what the fuck else is there for me to do?”
“Study, hit the fuckin’ books if you want something to do.”
“See that right there, stop talking to me like I’m a kid. I’m not your child so you don’t get to boss my ass around. Hold that shit in for seven and a half months.”
“What?”
“I’m pregnant; you’re going to be a daddy in a couple of months. Sleep on that.” She glared at me then got up and rushed to the bedroom slamming the door behind her. I tried to open the door but she locked it.
“Baby, open the door.”
“Hell no, you might as well make yourself comfortable because I’m not sleeping with you tonight. Have fun on that couch.” I sucked my teeth then leaned back against the door. I’m about to be a father? What the fuck?
Chapter Six.
Nick
The next day I got up and went straight to Mello’s place after I got dressed. I wasn’t about to lay there and wait for her to bring that stupid ass job up again. We got into it all over again last night when she finally decided to let me in the bedroom. We actually spent damn near half the night arguing about it. There is no way in hell I’m letting her work for her father. It doesn’t have shit to do with my pride she just needs to finish school and I got the rest.
I know she means well but I want Kira to know I can give her any and everything. I can achieve both of our dreams with what I’m doing. She’s going to kill me if she finds out but that’s why she’s not going to, she doesn’t need to know anyway.
“Aye! Nick i know you hear me talking to you man.” Barry said throwing a piece of paper at my head.
“Huh? What?” I looked at him confused/
“How did it go last night?“
"Oh it was good. Shit was smooth.”
“That’s whats up, but it won’t always be that easy. Keep that in mind.”
“Oh I got you.”
“That’s good to hear. Keep up the good work little cuz.” Mello said walking in giving me a small duffel full of money.
“This mine?” I asked looking in the bag.
“Hell yeah. B already got his.” He said laughing.
I think Mello could get a vibe from me only because I started acting a little weird. All this money just for one night? If I’m getting paid like this I’m going to keep doing this shit. With money like this Kira doesn’t have to even think about working. We can move with the money in this bag. Things are finally looking up, I just can’t tell her what I’m doing or she will flip, especially when I told her that I would never think about doing what Mello does.
“So what is this I hear about Kira wanting to work and you’re not letting her?” Mello asked sitting down.
"You just heard yourself say it, she doesn’t need to. I want her to focus on school, I’ll focus on the money. Plus it’s her dad that offered her a position. He think I can’t take of my wife when I can. Fuck out of here.”
“Look Nick I know how you are. Maybe it ain’t that bad man.”
“It is that bad.”
“Aight, I’m just saying you have to put your pride aside and think about Kira too.”
“I’m always thinking about Kira.”
“You know what Nick, go do some work because you’re going to make me angry. You too B. Get out. Y'all bags by the door.”
I chuckled then shrugged grabbing my bag. Barry did the same. Barry walked me to his car, telling me to get in with him. I did as I was told.
“Ride with me today. We’re going to do some things. Mello already told me what we need to do.” Barry said driving off.
“Cool with me.”
“Mello does have a point Nick. Let her do her own thing and help. If not she going to bug you about the shit.”
“When she sees I’m working ‘two jobs’ and bringing in good money she won’t say anything.”
“Don’t tell her you got two jobs because then she’ll really want to take the job. Just say you have a different job that pays more.”
“Thats good. I just have to think of something.”
“You’ll figure shit out my nigga.”
I nodded while he pulled up to some run down house. You could see a couple kids hanging out outside. I looked around getting out the car. When they saw Barry they all ran inside.
“Where are we?” I asked looking confused.
“You’ll see.” He replied walking up to the house.
I nodded following him inside the house. The place looked ran down. All the furniture had holes and tears in them. Most of the furniture actually was actually on the floor with no legs under them to keep them up. When Barry and I walked into the kitchen there was mattress with four kids sitting on it.
“Barry what is this man?” I asked looking at the kids.
“Things gets real Nick, I want you to see this shit.” He said walking past the kids down the hall. In the room was a woman passed out on the mattress that was lying on the ground. Her skin was pale and her hair was all over the place. The clothes she had on were dirty and ripped up. You could tell she was on something. Barry kicked her leg but she didn’t budge.
“She dead?”
“No.” He replied squatting down and shaking her. She woke up scared as shit but once she saw Barry, she calmed down, then stroked his face.
“Barry what-“
“Nick this is my mom.”
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“I thought you said your mama-“
“She did, she left because she couldn’t handle me and her high so I guess you can see which one she chose. Unfortunately she kept getting pregnant. Look at what she got my brothers and sisters in man.”
“Why don’t you take them out of here then?”
“Then do what with them Nick? I can’t take care of them, I can barely take care of my damn self. I don’t want any violence around them neither. I give money to the oldest and he takes care of them. I try the best I can but i have to stack some more bread. Until then…they have to deal with this. I refuse to put them in a group home because they’re going to get split up if I do that.”
“Damn man.”
“If you see a pregnant bitch ask you for some of what you selling, turn her away. Do you understand me? Don’t let her turn into this.”
“I got it.”
Barry turned back to his mom, putting her body back on the mattress and putting a blanket on her. He walked out the room with me following him and closing the door behind him. Barry then walked into the kitchen where the kids were talking to them for a bit. I stayed where I was because it probably be best for me to stay out their business since this is the first time in years I’ve seen shit like this. Barry patted my shoulder and we walked out and back to the car.
“I didn’t know man.”
“I know you didn’t know. Mello doesn’t even know. “
“How long she been like this?”
“A couple of years now as far as I know. I was on the block with Mello one day and he passed her some. I knew she looked familiar but i couldn’t place her face. When Mello went to the car, I asked her name and she said it. I snatched it from her and told her to go. Ever since then she would come back to that spot for more. One day I followed to that house.” Barry said driving away.
“Damn.”
“Don’t tell Mello. If he found out that he was giving my mother that shit it’s going to fuck him up.”
“I got you, you’re not going to tell him though?”
“I am, in my own time.”
“Alright man.”
“Let’s finish this shit then get back to Mello.” He said going to the spot.
It may fuck him up but he needs to know. Shit like this makes you think twice about you’re doing, but I’m not about to stop. I’ll do anything for me and Kira to be good. She doesn’t need to run to her father and I’ll prove it to her. Shit…I got some thinking to do.
Kira.
I saw Nick leave this morning and of course he didn’t say anything to me. I didn’t care, I didn’t have shit to say to him either. He can stay in his little fit if he wants to. I just wish he could see that there is nothing is wrong with me working but It’s whatever at this point. He’s stubborn so of course he’s not going to listen.
I didn’t know whether he ever came back home because after I saw he left, I got up got dressed and left. I didn’t want to talk to anyone today, not even Gabby. I didn’t feel like hearing her mouth either.
To get my mind off of everything I took the opportunity to go shopping, we really didn’t have the money for me to just spend on bullshit but oh well. It was either let retail therapy get my mind right or Nick and I were going to be fighting all damn night.
When I came up to the apartment building I saw the lights in our apartment were indeed off.Of course his ass wouldn’t be home. I haven’t heard from him all day either, this man was going to get a mouthful when he came back through here/
I walked up to the apartment with my bags and went inside. My feet froze in place as I saw the whole apartment lit with candles and roses on the ground. I tried to speak but no words could come out. Nick came out the bedroom in a button down and some slacks, his good clothes.
“What is this?” I asked coming closer to him.
“I want to say sorry for my attitude. My queen shouldn’t be upset at me.” He said wrapping his arms around me.
“So you’re going to let me take the job?” I asked getting happy.
“No.”
See there he goes, fucking up. I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms turning away from him. I heard him chuckle while wrapping his arms around me, then he held up a box in front of me. Nick opened the box to reveal a diamond bracelet. My eyes widened looking from the bracelet to him.
“Nick where did you get this?!”
“What you mean baby? I bought it.” He replied smiling putting it on my wrist.
“How did you afford something like this?”
“Don’t worry about that baby.”
“No Nick, Did you steal it?!”
“Kira you really think I would resort to stealing? No, I put up another job and they pay me more at this one.”
“Is it with Footlocker?”
“Nah…it’s a security job.”
“Security? You’re not licensed though?”
“Mello pulled some strings for me, even got me an advance. That’s why I been gone and coming late sometimes.”
“But-“
“But nothing baby, I already worked out my schedules I won’t be hurting myself. It’s a safe job, I still want to work at Footlocker for the discount but I’ll only be there like one day a week.”
“They really pay you more?”
“Yeah, I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“How much is the pay?”
“Put it this way…enough to get us out this hell hole.”
“Really?” I beamed.
“Yeah baby, enough about that though. Look I even cooked us steak, mashed potatoes, and greens. It’s ice cream and pie in the fridge.”
“You cooked?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
“Okay maybe I didn’t cook it. The people at the restaurant did…but I watched.” He said chuckling.
“Uh huh.” I laughed walking to the table and sitting down.
Nick sat across from me with a huge smile on his face. I see he is happy now. I guess he is really happy since I don’t have to work, I wish he would open his mind but you know what…at least we will be able to get up out of this place.
“I got another surprise in the bedroom for you.”
“Oh yeah? What is it?”
Nick looked at me and wiggled his tongue. He is so damn nasty…I love it.
Mello
She bounced on top of me making both of us reach our point. Damn this girl was good. I busted hard into the condom as her legs shook hard. She slid off me panting while I grabbed a blunt. I need to smoke after that round.
“Do you have to smoke that?” She muttered turning over.
“I do actually. Good nut good high.”
“Ugh.” She said getting up and getting dressed.
“Why you got an attitude? You ain’t have it five minute ago when this dick was in you.”
“Shut up okay. That was a one time thing. “
“Isn’t that what you said the last time. Like I said, you can’t keep the hood out of you huh?”
“Fuck you.”
“You just did that baby girl.” I said grabbing her panty and bra.
“Give those here.”
“No. I’m adding them to my collection. “
“You know what fine. I have more at home.”
“I’m sure yo prissy ass do, miss I can buy everything.”
“You still can’t have me though.”
“Oh baby keep telling yourself that.” I winked at her. She rolled her eyes and walked out my room towards the door. She didn’t want me to catch up with her because she was practically ran out the door. She tried to close the door on me but I caught. She ran to her car trying to get in.
“BYE GABBY! SEE YOU NEXT TIME BABY” I smiled big. She gave me the finger and drove off.
Yeah she will be back.
