The not-so-arcane Texas Fact of the Day: Four years ago, the remains of 19-year-old sailor Victor Patrick Tumlinson, who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, came home to be buried in Raymondville, Texas. Tumlinson’s remains were identified through mitochondrial DNA analysis, dental and anthropological analysis. Descendants of Tumlinson’s sister were asked to give mitochondrial DNA samples to compare with the remains. “I was overwhelmed,” his niece Cathy Ayers told TIME. “I thought it was not ever going to happen.” The 19-year-old from Raymondville was on the USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941 while it was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor and attacked by Japanese aircraft. The battleship capsized after multiple torpedo hits. Tumlinson was among the 429 crewmen who were killed. Victor's remains were buried with full military honors on December 7, 2019 in the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery.
