One of the biggest adjustments to working in an office again at least part time after being full remote for years is forgetting how much food I need to bring with me for a full day. What do you mean it’s 3pm and I’m very understandably snacky but I only brought my lunch and I ate that at lunch time and why can’t I just pop into my pantry I didn’t realize how many times I day I nibbled.

I start my new job on Monday and I’m looking forward to it, but I’m in that weird space of not yet feeling out how my standard answers will go over with my new boss.
Her: Have you filled out the ID and background check paperwork yet?
Me: Yeah, I haven’t heard back on ID card but the background check came back clean.
Her: So we don’t have to worry about a stack of felonies!
How I want to respond: I’ve gotten pretty good at hiding the dead bodies!

I feel like my work should just close today because it’s basically already Memorial Day, the sun is out for the first time in a week, and so many people are already off it’s not like I’m gonna get things done anyway.
I have a mail packet to review and a letter to copy edit and that’s it. I can be done in an hour. And honestly, both of those could be Tuesday list items.
At this point we’re all just avoiding each other of Teams pretending we’re working and it’s not a pre-holiday.
Unless something changes… I have a completely meeting-free day tomorrow.
We have a big project that goes live Friday that I’m only tangentially involved in and Ive gotten multiple messages of ‘hey do you mind if we cancel for tomorrow cause I’m deep in Project?’ and ‘can we push back X because of Project?’ And I can barely contain my glee as I delete meetings and tasks left and right with a conciliatory ‘sure, if you need that time I can be flexible.’

Watching leadership finally process in real time a fact that I have been loudly and repeatedly warning about for *six months* is fascinating.

Real funny that they finally managed to break my spirit at work last week so completely and so finally that all of my coworkers are rushing today to vent/get my opinion on/commiserate with on the Trump funding fiasco and the only response I can muster is ‘yep, cancelling USAID is a real pickle. Nope, no idea what’s next with the budget. It’s above my pay grade and I’ve been told I ‘need to be more positive about things I disagree with’ instead of raising stress points or concerns or pushing back against things that we could do better. So… *shrug*.’
