2025 Global Exploration Summit

The Explorers Club founded the Global Exploration Summit, on the 500th anniversary of the Magellan–Elcano circumnavigation of the globe.

The Royal Canadian Geographical Society hosted this year’s summit, at our headquarters in Ottawa.

It was an inspiring gathering of the world’s foremost explorers: from astronauts to deep-sea divers; from people braving physical perils to those breaking through the frontiers of knowledge.

Investiture Ceremony for the Coronation Medal

It is just as well that there are few occasions when Canadians are called to wear public honours: all the metal makes me feel like a discount version of Mr T.

I was sincerely moved that my peers nominated me for the King Charles III Coronation Medal, and I thank the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for hosting a lovely investiture ceremony.

I know my contributions to Canada and the natural world have been modest parts of far greater efforts, involving people across our country.

I am more grateful to my colleagues than I could possibly express for their generosity, not only in this moment, but also throughout our work together.

Royal Canadian Geographical Society's 2024 Impact Report

This has been an extraordinary year for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society:

One of our expeditions discovered the wreck of the Quest;

Canadian Geographic became Canada's top paid-circulation magazine;

We supported field research that extended public understanding of Canada and the natural world.

I commend our CEO John Geiger and his staff for their stellar accomplishments.

Investiture Reception at the French Embassy

I thank Ambassador Michel Miraillet for hosting a reception at the French embassy, for my Royal Canadian Geographical Society colleagues who were invested into the Order of Canada.

Filmmaker James Cameron was among them.

I was delighted to attend with my friends, House Speaker Greg Fergus and past MP Derek Lee.
