Royal - RE-202 Jet Phaser
"The Beast From The East. 1977 RE-202 Jet Phaser. Branded “Royal”, but identical to the more often seen Aria RE-202. Cast metal box, 18v, huge footprint - like four regular Boss pedals together. Big pedals sound better. There appear to have been two Aria versions - the other being without the fuzz volume seen here. Like all fuzz/phase combos, this is great fun on guitar - Hawkwind-style wigouts are irresistible. However, I suspect this is most interesting with a bass - Larry Graham used an Roland AP7 Jet Phaser to great effect and this is definitely a knockoff of that. The Roland and its clones also have a significant volume drop when the fuzz comes in, so these are either “on” all the time (unlikely, except when recording a specific part) or belong in a loop with a boost. The options are bypass/phase only/phase with “jet” fuzz, but no fuzz by itself. Realistically this is a special occasions in-your-face brain melt effect and deserves to be kicked on in full force, with both effects on, when an audience least expects it."
