Is it possible to resume breastfeeding after your milk supply has dried up? I had to go back to nursing school when my son was 12 days old. We. supplemented with formula but eventually I was supplementing with my breast milk until I gave up when I was only able to pump 5mLs. I'm quite bitter that I've had to sacrifice so much to get through school and that I wasn't able to give my son the best. Thank you <3
I’m so sorry that you had that experience! There’s nothing worse than wishing you could have done something better, especially for your child.
Yes, you can re-lactate, it just takes lots of time and energy.
If you’re still making any milk, you can start with these tips and tricks for increasing your milk supply.
If not, you might need to start from scratch with hormones and stimulation. Click here to see how to start lactating without being pregnant first.
Even if you can’t get yourself to start re-lactating, you might want to try using an at-breast-supplementer with banked human milk or formula.
Depending on how old your baby is and how long they have been having formula for, it might take a little time and learning for your baby as well as you. Don’t feel put out if your baby has a little difficulty learning to breastfeed all over again - it’s very different from bottle feeding.
I strongly suggest working with a lactation consultant and a healthcare provider to get the most possible support that you can. They can make a plan with you for re-introducing your baby to breastmilk in the right way for you and your baby. Good luck!
