MobileMovieMaking Tip #48: LOOK FOR REACTIONS. Our eyes are drawn to dramatic images: a giant ape atop a skyscraper, a gunfighter about to draw, a couple having a fight. But experienced filmmakers understand that often the most powerful shot in a sequence will zero in on the reactions of one or more onlookers. Reactions can convey a wide range of emotions such as fear, anger, amazement, and—as in a famous clip from “A Hard Day’s Night”—excitement. Reaction shots work in every genre. For example, if you’re recording a child’s first piano recital, you might include the audience reacting with pleasure to the performance. When making a travelogue, you might picture your traveling companions reacting to celebrated landmarks. The reaction shot usually follows a shot of whatever person, object, or action evokes the reaction. That’s logical. But to keep the audience guessing, a filmmaker will sometimes first show the reaction and then what caused it. The real key is to make sure that the reaction shot conveys a clear emotion. The reaction shot in the first frame here is from Natalia Gurkina’s “Confession,” a one-minute drama that won the Grand Jury Prize at the MoMo Film Festival. The second frame shows what the woman is reacting to: a man who using sign language to say, “I love you.” #mobilemoviemakingtips #reactionshot #smartphonemoviemaking #iPhonemovies #cinematography #movieacting https://www.instagram.com/p/Buzg424g4XA/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a1sd2l0ok3gk
