hide away with you
sam winchester x overwhelmed! reader (gn)

loud. too loud. are the only thoughts swimming through your mind as you shift your weight from foot to foot, standing next to sam. you're having a get together with all your friends and family— and it's not to say you don't love them, but they can be a lot.
everyone is having their own separate conversations, which makes for the entire room sounding like one big echo of overlapping voices. it's overwhelming, making your head feel like it's spinning. sam and eileen are chatting about something or other, your hand grasping the bottom of his jacket sleeve, fingers finding solace in the smooth fabric. it's somewhat grounding, but not enough. you know you need to get some air.
you tug gently on sam's sleeve, just enough to pull his attention away from eileen and onto you. he glances down at you and tilts his head all puppy-like, and you feel yourself melt a little at the sight. he doesn't say anything, just waits for you to explain or tug him away somewhere.
"i need to leave," you decide to say after a moment of silence. he nods, and you let your hand slip under his sleeve to grasp at his hand, your fingers interlocking.
he lowers his voice, then whispers out a soft, is everything okay?" his thumb brushing over the back of your hand, a gesture that makes your heart skip a beat (although that may just be the heart palpitations— you aren't sure.)
"yeah," you respond, voice a little strained, "just need air."
you let go of his hand reluctantly, because you simply cannot spend another minute in this situation without freaking out. you linger for just a moment, fingers brushing, before rushing off towards the staircase and finding your way to a guest bedroom.
you let the door close behind you, breathing heavy as you back up towards the bed, stumbling onto it and sitting. you lean your head against your knees and try to catch your breath— you feel pathetic, heart pounding out of your chest and breaths coming out in heaves.
you don't know when exactly it happens, but your cheeks become stained with tears and you're choking back sobs against the fabric of your pants. you don't even know why. it was just a little loud, and now here you are, struggling to catch your breath.
you manage to regain a little bit of composure, thank god, and that's when the door clicks, slowly opening. it's sam, who looms by the doorway in an almost awkward way.
"wanted to check up on you," he rubs the back of his neck, "you rushed off kind of suddenly, did something—.. you're crying." his voice is soft, like he can tell you're obviously overwhelmed.
you don't look at him, just wiping your eyes with your sweater sleeve, willing more tears not to come. he steps into the room and closes the door behind him gently, hesitantly coming to sit on the bed next to you, close enough that your legs press together.
"hey, look at me," he almost pleads, a hand finding its way to your jaw and guiding your head upwards. "did something happen?"
you shake your head and let out a sniffle, leaning into his touch as a way to ground yourself. "no, 's just loud out there. i'm being dramatic, don't worry about me."
he scoffs quietly, thumbing at your cheek gently. "of course i'm gonna worry about you."
you exhale shakily, gathering your words. "i'm sorry, i... it's stupid, for me to get this upset over it being a little loud." it wasn't just the loudness bothering you, but that was the last straw, you supposed.
"don't apologize," his voice is impossibly soft, his hand fully cupping your cheek now, thumb brushing the leftover tears from your skin. you feel so vulnerable, but somehow sam makes that feeling not so terrifying. "it's okay to get overwhelmed."
you nod, your hand coming up to cover his on your face, fingers lazily half-interlocking. "i— i know that," you start, "just.. i don't know. feel pathetic for freaking out about it."
"well, you aren't." he shakes his head and leans in to press a very soft peck just under your eye, his nose brushing your damp eyelashes. "here, breathe with me." he presses one more kiss to your nose bridge before pulling back when you nod.
"okay. just.. follow what i do, okay?" you agree and he pulls his hand away from your face, instead taking your hand and intertwining it with his. "in," he inhales, deep and long. you do the same, and then you let the air out of your mouths together. you repeat that a few times until you feel a little more grounded.
"think i'm a little better now," you mutter, squeezing his hand once. that gets a little smile from him, and you swear his smiles must be contagious because the corners of your lips quirk upwards too.
"good," he looks at you with those doe eyes and you swear you want him to never look away again— even when you don't want to be seen. "we can stay in here for a while longer, let you calm down a little longer."
you like that idea, so you nod and grasp at him, pulling him into a tight embrace. he's so large that you feel enveloped by his body, and it's a comforting feeling— he's warm and gentle, and he smells like heaven on earth, soft and musky.
he hums against your hair, just holding you tightly. he must know you need it, because he doesn't let go for a long time. when he finally does, his hand still lingers on your arm, rubbing gentle circles into your skin. you give him a stupidly soft smile and he returns it, the large craters in his cheeks becoming visible.
sam leans in to kiss your forehead, then he peppers kisses all over your face, like he's trying to memorize the way your skin feels on his lips. "sammy," you giggle, heart fluttering at the attention he's giving all to you.
you sling your arms around his broad shoulders and press a chaste kiss to his lips, which he hums contentedly at. you can feel the way his mouth curves into a soft smile against yours, and something about that makes you feel special. you kiss him once more, mouths lingering together a little longer this time before you pull back, hands sliding out from around his shoulders and down his arms.
"don't wanna go back down now," you grumble, "wanna love on you more." your hand traces faint shapes against the skin of his arms.
you swear sam blushes at that, which elicits a little giggle from you. "later," he smiles softly, "we should probably rejoin the others now if you're feeling better."
you let out a reluctant little noise but you nod, pulling your hand away from his arm and pushing yourself up off of the bed, holding out your hand to help him up. he takes it— of course he does— standing up and stepping close to you.
he wraps his big hands around your waist and presses one last kiss to your lips, sighing against your mouth. he resists the urge to deepen it. you feel yourself flush and you grin hard, playfully rolling your eyes.
the two of you finally make your way out of the guest room and he leads you downstairs, your hand intertwined with his. although you feel better now, the idea of being anywhere but here with sam feels infinitely more appealing. you would be perfectly content to just hide away with him forever.
