Read-EH-Thon Day 4

The two books I will focus on for the rest of the readathon.

After reading around 50 pages of each book, I know how I will be tackling each going forward.

I feel drawn to the story of Franz Adler and his family in The Far Side of the Sky, so can see that it will be a faster read. Maybe I will be done next week.

Meanwhile, when reading Wild Rose, it feels to be a more leisurely read, so I can see it something I can read slowly over the rest of August.

Read-EH-Thon Day Two

Just before dinner, I picked up I Am Woman by Lee Maracle for a second time.

It contained a powerful call for action and activism against oppression by Canadian state and society of Indigenous peoples.

The author also conveys hers is not the only voice.

I have less than 50 pages in the book and will return to it later tonight or tomorrow.

Next from the stack on my table, I have decided for the next while, I will read Wild Rose by Sharon Butala.

The book and author fulfills three prompts, a book with nature on the cover, book set in province I have been, and an Canadian book award nominee.

Read-EH-Thon After Dinner Read

The Far Side of The Sky is the first book in a trilogy by Daniel Kalla. It begins with a doctor in Vienna. Franz Adler flees with his young daughter and other Jewish citizens from the Nazi regime in the 1930s. They travel to Shanghai where Adler forms a friendship with the nurse Soon Yi “Sunny” Mah. While Germany begins to occupy countries outside its borders in Europe, the Pacific War is already underway.

I want to make effort to read a book I have tried to read many times before only to put down after a few pages by an author whose works I have started to collect, and want the motivation of a Canadian readathon to push me to begin reading.

Start to the Read-EH-Thon

It is another warm sunny afternoon. I just finished the Preface to I AM WOMAN by Lee Maracle. She is from the Sto:lo First Nation in British Columbia, Canada.

Immediately, I feel pulled into the story by the words of the author. It helps that I heard her speak in person just before social-distancing measures were put in place in my province and across the country

Her words in the preface provide an introduction to the work ahead in the volume, as well as provide a look back at the journey of the book. The copy I am reading from is actually the second edition of the book.

Reading the preface helps me to situate myself in the language and dialogue taking place within the pages

Now, I will start by reading the first essay, “I Want to Write.”
