GRANDMASTER DRABBLE

ANON SAID: Would you mind writing a drabble of the Grandmaster finding the reader's surgery scars?

Taking a lazy day was not something that En Dwi did very often. He was always busy ruling over Sakaar, planning his next Contest of Champions and everything else he felt was an important use of his time.

Today, however, was different. It’s your birthday, and for your gift, you had asked that he take the day off and spend it with you. The two of you had been ‘together’ on and off for several Earth-Months now. In that time, the two of you had been on perhaps three? Four dates?

Anyway, so today was your day. The Grandmaster pampered you as he said you ‘deserved.’ He brought you breakfast in bed, gave you a massage, gave you a gift anyway. It was some kind of Sakaaran jewellery. It was pretty in any case.

So that brought you here and now, the two of you making out on your bed. The two of you had never had much time to get down to business, as it were, but you were certainly making up for lost time now. En Dwi pulled your shirt over your body, and his hands began to rub over your skin. He paused, pulling back, his hands running over a particular spot on your chest.

“What are these, Peach?” He asked as you sat up, legs either side of his hips. You looked down to where he was looking, even though you’d know what you’d see. Your scars, from surgery. 

“They’re scars,” you said softly, putting your hand over the Grandmasters’. He hummed.

“I can, uh, I can see that, Pet. Where did they, where did they come from?” You leaned down to give him a peck on the cheek, and you leant back. 

“From my surgery,” you offered simply. He nodded and twisted the two of you around. He put both of his hands on either sides of your hips, and moved down so that his head was above your scars. He pressed light kisses to the raised skin, and you ran your fingers through his hair. Something that he he never usually let anyone do. 

“They’re, uh, they’re beautiful. Just like you,” he said, looking up at you as he pressed another kiss to the skin. “My greatest treasure.”

i know this is going to sound super petty but i hate those generic 'reblog if you love fics and fic writers!!!!!' posts that get a lot of notes super fast. i mean i find it adorable and flattering when im tagged in those but like if you love fickers so much maybe???? say something to them??? same with the 'dont get discouraged if you dont get feedback bc there are many people lurking and enjoy your work' ones, if they enjoy it that much they should let the ficker know. idk just a thought

So I’ve been thinking about this ask and why the (presumed) sentiment behind it was mildly buggering me, but it took me some time to bring my mind around it. Anon, please don’t feel like this is aimed at you, as I completely understand where you’re coming from: your ask simply triggered some general observations I’d like to share. Warning, potential for controversy.

We fanfic authors freely choose to share our work with an anonymous audience on the internet. Readers freely choose to spend time reading those stories. Some readers freely choose to give us feedback.

Those are all decisions that are taken voluntarily by both sides; there is nothing binding about that in either direction. Neither are readers entitled to (particular) stories to read, nor are authors entitled to feedback.

I repeat: authors are not entitled to feedback.

Yes, we are gifting an undefined audience with our (very hard!) work; but we choose to do so. Therefore, we don’t have any particular claim on how our gift will be received.

What I’m getting at:

Sometimes I get the feeling that authors, here on tumblr or elsewhere, are stuck in a mindset of bitterness and resentment towards readers that don’t comment (”lurkers”). We talk endlessly about why they should comment, why it’s terrible they don’t, how sad and angry it makes us not to get feedback (I’m probably guilty of this, too). And those are all very valid emotions! But still, this builds a lot of pressure on lurkers witnessing that entire debate, which I think is detrimental:

From my experience, some people will cave in, somewhat begrudgingly, to this kind of social pressure, and comment out of a sense of duty; but most will be scared off by the strong feelings surrounding that issue and take the side to interact with us as little as possible.

So what should we do?

First, try and develop empathy towards lurkers. Those aren’t evil greedy persons that want cheap entertainment, “freeloaders” taking advantage of naive author’s hard work. Those are people anxious about how their interaction will be perceived, who don’t want to “bother” or think what they have to say is not important enough; those are people stuck in the traditional “passive reader role” who aren’t used to phrasing and sharing feedback (talked about this in this post). In the end, commenting means effort for most - and we can’t coerce people to put in effort for something that’s been gifted to them for free. We should try to keep that in mind, and stop blaming. 

Second, be patient. Be kind. Teach. Spread the word that comments are important, that comments and interaction matters to us, but try to educate rather than accuse. Personally I like to think that my stories made some random stranger smile, or laugh, or just kill time for a few hours. Of course I’d be happier if that stranger let me know that they exist - but I have no influence on it. The only thing I can do is try and create a climate of positivity - telling my readers that their feedback of any kind will be appreciated, but that in any case I’m still happy they’re there.

All in all I’d like fandom and fanfic to be a safe, pleasant, guilt-free zone for readers and writers alike. And I think being kind and acceptant towards all kind of readers, those who love to interact and those who lurk, is how we authors can contribute to that.
