Monster March | Day 16 | Shapeshifter

I'm not gonna lie, I had such a grand idea for this one and then it was really hard to write I hope you love it as much as I (and your shapeshifter clone) love you

If you were being so honest with yourself, you hadn't not thought about what you would do with a monster that could shapeshift into your own appearance. Since your entry into the world of creatures, cryptic, and beyond, you'd run through the endless possibilities you'd read in lore books and fairy tales. A few seemed far fetched; like they'd only exist in your fantasies. Until they showed up. 

As the shapeshifter started to take on your appearance, mirroring your face down to the last freckle and your hair down to the last split end, you bypassed shock and went straight to acceptance. 

As they- well… you- reached a hand out to stroke your cheek, you couldn't help but admire the confidence in the way they moved. A confidence you couldn’t share. A confidence you wished they’d mirrored from you. A confidence wholly their own.

“Oh sweet thing, what a beautiful body you're sharing with us,” the other-you cooed. 

You shrugged. “It's alright.” You were being kinder to yourself in that moment than usual. 

You tried to work on the negative self talk. You really did. But it was hard to believe it when you were surrounded by the kind of society that lauded perfection and not…well…you. Real rage flared in your eyes. A passion you thought had been killed somewhere in the neglect and the rejection and the hurt lit up eyes that were at once familiar and estranged. You wondered if you’d ever felt that protective of your own skin. 

“It is your body. It is our body. And it is everything,” the reverence in your voice cracked with your heart. “Let me show you.” 

You expected to be on your back in a heartbeat, hands on you, writhing under the attentions. The way that your imaginings had gone. As you closed your eyes and braced you were more shocked by the gentle touch - a hand through your hair. Your hair threaded through their fingers - your fingers - as they stroked it. 

“Your hair is beautiful. You put so much care into it. It’s a perfect halo to your visage.” 

Your eyes opened, an unforgiving crease in your forehead that communicated some doubt of sincerity that your mirror self smiled too kindly at. 

Their hand moved from your hair to your forehead, thumb massaging the wrinkles you’d furrowed between your eyes. 

“These wrinkles show a life lived and experienced fully. Emotions felt. Memories made. A wealth of knowledge and feelings that would drown a lesser being.” 

You couldn’t help it. You leaned into the stroking touch, pressing your face into their hand. Their hand stroked down your cheek and you tried not to flinch. 

“The marks here are beautiful as well. Not the flaws you think them to be. They are human, incredibly human. Deliciously human. How I love to take their shape.” 

Lips caressed the path their thumb stroked over your cheek and jaw.

𖹭. d’akar: an anti-magic material that can greatly weaken him if he comes into contact with it.

𖹭. extreme emotional attachment: while reapers may remind one of humans, they are not. they are beings with very empathetic instincts and have souls bigger than the average mortal being — a thing that has been with them since their creation. they become extremely attached to things they love and it may cause them to become erratic if enough they love is taken away from them.

𖹭. fading: occurs when a reaper goes through immense hurt and pain. their physical form quite literally begins to disappear, making them appear transparent. it can be a very painful process, both emotionally and physically. until their physical form eventually fades away and their soul moves on to the afterlife
