Reading the Romance of Fan Cultural Production:
“Jenkins (1992) noted that a fan music video was almost always set to a contemporary popular song, and this is true of the Lianca videos.11 In most of them, the songs are about love relationships and/or their associated difficulties, often falling into the “ballad” genre; thus, both the lyrics and the melody tend to conform to cultural understandings of emotionality.”
I wonder why it is almost always contemporary music that is played with fan videos. Maybe it is to ground the original media into the current time period. Like if someone made a fan video for Shakespeare’s story “Romeo and Juliet”, they would probably use some Ed Sheeran love song not only to convey that the values of love and compassion are part of the “Romeo and Juliet” story, but they used a contemporary song to emphasis how the story is timeless and it’s values are universal.
