Hi! I have curly hair so allow me to impart my curly hair wisdom(?) on you. Cue long post
1. Good shampoo/conditioner. I cannot stress how much of a difference it makes if you can afford to spend around $10 (or a bit more) on each. Something specifically for curly hair or for moisture. Ulta (if you have one around) is currently doing Jumbo bottles on sale so now is a great time to splurge if you can afford to!
1.5. There’s a micro step in here that suggests that not using as hot of water in the shower helps retain moisture but imo there’s no point of showering if the water isn’t as hot as you can possibly stand so I ignore this advice. You can take it or leave it.
2. Do not use a towel to dry your hair after the shower. Get a microfiber towel or a t-shirt (I just use an old tee). I literally wrap my hair up in a tee until I’m ready to style and then take it out. May be 3 minutes may be 20 depending on what I’m doing.
3. Do not brush it. Use a wide-tooth comb. And even then try to minimize how much you comb it. Part it, get out tangles, put down the comb.
4. Flip your head over and then product from tip scrunching up. I personally use mouse and then a curl cream. Different products work differently for everyone so this part is up to your hair. Again on my Ulta kick, if you have one, they’re great about product returns if you don’t like something you can take it back and try something else!
5. If you’re going to leave it to air dry, DO NOT TOUCH IT (this is the hardest step. Don’t look in the mirror. Don’t touch it. Walk away and do something else and let it dry.) It will look real weird when it’s half dry but trust the process. Or, acquire a diffuser and slap that thing on your hair dryer and use the lowest heat and power setting. Tip your head and let the tips of your hair sit inside the diffuser and bring the diffuser up to your roots. Dry as much as you want. When I do this I get bored after like five minutes and stop and let it air dry the rest of the way.
6. There is also some advice out there that suggests not using any hot tools on your hair when you’re trying to let your hair be naturally curly. ie: no straightening or curling irons, or blow dryers, just natural curls only for like 30 days or something to let your hair find itself. That is also not in my cards because I will straighten, curl, and wear it naturally curly all within a week if I feel like it I refuse to go natural curls all the time. However if you’re really liking wanting your natural curls all the time this may be a route for you!
I hope this helps!!! I am more than happy to talk if you have any specific questions. Good luck!!! 💖
THANK YOU SO MUCH omg you have no idea what a lifesaver you are seriously. some may be difficult as I am incapable of taking anything other than hot showers but I’m definitely investing in good shampoo/conditioner and products so!! will also order a diffuser yay
