So I broke down and bought a reproduction copy of Lucienne’s Quest for 3DO off Etsy for $25 because I didn’t want to spend $300 to get it legit.
Honestly, I’m a bit conflicted when it comes to repro game carts/discs... especially ones that aren’t homebrew, unreleased titles, translations, or hacks.
On the one hand, they’re a good way to enjoy rare or prohibitively expensive games on original hardware. Also, they are (potentially) aesthetically pleasing.
On the other, repros feel like cheating. I don’t count them as part of my collection, which kinda makes it feel like I’m not getting anything of substance. Even ignoring my feelings as a collector, people are profiting off of the hard work of others. I’m not going to pretend that game companies are losing revenue here, but rather that the ethics of selling homebrew, rom hacks, and translations (that programmers and rom hackers put a lot of time and effort into) are very fuzzy.
I’m not entirely sure what point I was trying to make with all this...
However, I am curious how others feel about reproductions, though.
