Alma Mahler (not Jewish) had been the wife of Gustav Mahler, the famed director of the Vienna Court Opera and a successful composer. Gustav died of natural causes in 1911, and Alma (who had not been monogamous in her marriage, and was well-known for it) began to have relationships with other men. One was the painter Oskar Kokoschka (also not Jewish).

Between 1912 and 1914 she had a tumultuous affair with the artist Oskar Kokoschka, who created works inspired by their relationship. After the end of their relationship, she returned to a former lover, Walter Gropius, and married him. Eventually she married Franz Werfel, the Jewish author, and fled with him to the United States in the Nazi period.

It is easy to say that Kokoschka never got over his relationship with Alma, though perhaps that is too easy an excuse. At any event, Kokoschka created a doll of Alma, which he would bring with him to parties and social events. He even had the doll "symbolically birthed" by a midwife he hired. Eventually, in 1919, at a drunken party, he decapitated the doll. The doll was later recreated, and today can be found at the Leopold Museum in Vienna (pictured here).
