My dream of hearing @culturejedi speak in person came true today at #realfuture in Oakland! AND SHE WAS AMAZING! I NEEDED THIS SO MUCH in post #election2016 week as I figure out what my organizing role will be for the next 4 years. It was so meaningful to hear her connect slave trade to migration policy to incarceration to Brexit and our current reality with Trump. The theme of her talk was how technology is now infringing on core civil rights in the transition from broken windows policing to predictive policing with algorithms. Here are some stand out quotes and takeaways from her talk: “It’s not data that we lack, what we lack is power. No algorithm can change that.” “When the goal of decarceration is only fiscal, mass incarceration goes digital. Electronic monitoring." "Broaden your lens beyond the rigged election to fight the rigged democracy" “I believe that the story of our victory is at least as long as the story of our suffering.” Police companies are now outsourcing surveillance to private companies where they can claim their “neutral algorithms” surveil without bias when really they are allowed to police PoC communities with total impunity. Disentangle the narrative of bias and fear - the police will claim they are acting from a place of fear for legal impunity when really they are acting from a place of bias. #realfuturefair #t (at Oakland Museum of California)
