Film: “Race, Sex, & Cinema: The World of Marlon Riggs” - TONGUES UNTIED (d. Marlon Riggs, 1989, USA, DCP); REASSEMBLAGE (d. Trinh T. Minh-ha, 1982, USA, 16mm); LAS MADRES DE LA PLAZA DE MAYO (d. Lourdes Portillo & Susana Blaustein Muñoz, 1986, USA, 16mm), and shorts by Riggs and Isaac Julian.

Forum: BAM Rose Cinemas Format: As noted above

Observations: A big night at the theatre, with two back-to-back programs showing a couple of the biggest American experimental titles of the 1980s. (A third promised feature, LA OFRENDA, was replaced - possibly due to a shipping error, because the programmer didn’t warn us - with LAS MADRES, a compelling, if somewhat conventional, documentary about protests against Argentina’s dirty war; it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.) The first program was practically empty (the programmer quipped "you must be the real cinephiles in town"), while the Marlon Riggs feature (the final screening of several nights) was a virtual sell-out. When program advisor Vivian Kleiman asked who was seeing TONGUES UNTIED for the first time, almost the entire theatre threw up their hands (me too).
