Seriously wasn’t expecting such a fun and lively energetic band. I really liked the vocals of Lead singer, Brandon Hagen. Sort of deadpan like David Byrne, but also with a Country meets surf rock musicality at times... and definitely post punk. Sometimes Brandon would make weird high pitch sounds like a bird cawing... and sometimes he’d awkwardly dance. Sometimes Drew the Drummer would get stuck in his shirt, or play with his multitude of drumsticks... they are silly boys... but entertaining.
With all the fish talk, the song “Diver” was fitting right after Brandon fessed that he wasn't a fish... and was afraid because most of his friends were under the sea and what would they think? Ha. For some reason the song reminded me of Weezer’ meets Gomez’s “Airstream Driver”s “Sweater Song.”
The last song “Voodoo” felt very Rockabilly/Spaghetti Western with Brandon even donning a cowboy hat for more effect. There was no encore. They didn’t need one.
On a side note, I was glad to have a friend in the front row with me to enJOY the show with... I go to shows I go to because I like the band... I don’t go only if I have a friend to go with. I don't make suggestions to others to go with me... a long solo music goer, it’s often easier that way--especially when you are the front row girl... it’s definitely a more focused affair when you go alone. I prefer company only when it’s someone mutually digging the band, and my friend Allyson was a Vundabar fan from way, way back... unbeknownst to me until I clicked going on the FB event link. I often wonder how people craft their music likes these days, the web, Spotify and Pandora and Soundcloud and Bandcamp opening the music channels so wide. But what’s great about having someone with you is the memories you have together... you can reminisce together... “Remember that time we saw Vundabar...?”
This show was the first show after the death of my Indie Meet Up Group... I think it lives on in the action of enJOYing shows. Continuing to intake music like it’s sustenance... for me it is like food. I need it to live. I joke that I’m gonna be the elderly lady in the front row... but would that be so bad? I think I’m still in shock at the meet up shutting down, but it’s been quiet for so long, it was just time. But I know my love for music will continue.

Ratboys April 1, 2018 at Rebel Lounge, Phoenix AZ [Touring for their GL EP]
I arrived to Rebel right on time for Ratboys set... they were setting up when I walked in. At the door, they checked my bag... which was a first at Rebel. Over the PA, blared Sneaker Pimps--the album as another song came on right after 6 underground. I chuckled to myself that most of the kids in the room weren’t born when they album came out.
Ratboys opened with “Molly,” a song lead singer Julia Steiner said was about her sister... who’s name is Molly. “I just want to hold my family was a striking lyric for me.
As I posted an Instagram with the hastag #whenwilltheyplayelvisinthefreezer ? they answered by now, as in the second song. It’s like they got the request from my head that I definitely wanted to hear that song as it was my intro to them. Yay... despite the sad fact that was shared that it was about the passing of Julia’s Cat.
Somewhere into the set, I started wondering about who their musical delivery reminds me of and went oh, Rilo Kiley!
“GL” was explained as their latest EP effort that just released and that stood for Goodluck, about a friend who you reached the end of the rope with and had to cut ties with.
The song “Tixis” had a lyric that reminded me of the webtoon I’m currently reading... and life in general: “It's all a part of moving on and growing older/Let's make a pact to hold each other through.”
"Crying About The Planets” is a song about Douglas Mawson’s struggle to survive in Antarctica... it reminded me of an anime I just finished watching set in Antarctica called ‘A Place further than the universe,’ as well as a museum exhibition I saw called ‘Scott & Amundsen: Race to the End of the Earth.’ Makes one wonder what kind of curious mindset one would need to be crazy enough to go to that end of the earth... a place that’s so extreme and guarantees death more than life.
Throughout the set, Julia bantered quite frequently talking about the inspirations about her songs... falling in love, her family, her pet, people she’s read about... playing a song about winter in the desert as the ultimate empathetic gesture to us Phoenicians. The guitarist, David was pretty hard not to look at because he was wearing pigtails and was going by the name of Dippy... Julia teased Dippy longstocking... but he said no, just Dippy... but I thought to myself ‘Dippy-long-guitar-solo.’ Ha.
Their set was a great warm up to Vundabar.
