hi ik this is out of the blue but what are the best pieces of classical music to study to 😭
THARINI!!! 🥰 hiii omg u can drop by out of the blue anytime
that said, i am a HORRIBLE person to ask this to, as i get so distracted by classical music and get way too into it, and it spoils my studies 😭😭😭 but we won’t talk abt that therefore i cannot attest to non-distractibility, only good taste 😚
some slow pieces will probably keep you from getting too distracted! my favorite recommendations (in no particular order) i’ve labeled first tier btw lol, in case you only want to listen to a little and get a feel for it <3
first tier:
Any of Chopin’s nocturnes will do (here’s a good playlist i’ve enjoyed that will prob work for a long study sess: https://youtu.be/-gDinVAmtA0) My fav slow Chopin nocturnes are prob as follows, in no particular ranking (in case you just want to search them up instead of listening to the whole playlist):
-Nocturne in E Flat Major Op. 9 No. 2 (you have most likely heard this one before)
-Nocturne in A Flat Major Op. 32 No. 2
-Nocturne in G Minor Lento No. 3 Op. 15
-Nocturne in C Minor Lento No. 1 Op. 48
Concertos distract me lol bc I get too into it. But they won’t bore you, and violin concertos are not usually as loud as piano concertos. Hilary Hahn is a goddess. My two favs: https://youtu.be/J0w0t4Qn6LY and https://youtu.be/SDwKJ6bBXEA. Since they’re like half an hour each, they’re good if you just want to put on something and not get distracted changing the music.
Rachmaninoff is notorious for having quick or just in general passionate, exciting pieces, but Elegie Op. 3 No. 1 is a good, mostly slow piece. (https://youtu.be/sTUxrPJfpqk)
Dvořák: String Quartet #12, "American" MOVEMENT 2. Movement 1...you will never concentrate lol. (https://youtu.be/muCGueV3fbE)
Sonata "Pathetique" Op. 13 - II. Adagio cantabile from Beethoven (Make sure it is II. Movement 2!!) (https://youtu.be/vGq3-Fi_zQY)
Vladimir Rebikov’s Valse Meloncolique is so short, but maybe it could be a little interlude while you grab a hot chocolate or switch topics nsdgjldskjglsdg. (https://youtu.be/N957hd3L6ro)
Alexander Borodin’s string quartets, in particular:
-Allegro moderato in D major movement 1 (https://youtu.be/c9zR8Q1vTqU)
-Notturno (Nocturne): Andante in D major movement (https://youtu.be/RKsCxvT8e8Y)
second tier:
Personally, I get distracted by Chopin’s waltzes because they’re just so interesting, but they’re still not his fastest works (most of the time), and you might enjoy them when it’s like 1am and you’re trying not to fall asleep: https://youtu.be/qs9lRO9WT8g
Bach’s Inventions are all slow and very simple (they’re used for teaching technique to beginner/intermediate students). Here is a playlist with them all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1M_jEHJtrE&list=PLmQMwtOtZ0b1oyoaT0bOTnemEXfVQC88F JS Bach’s preludes are good as well: The link above for the playlist to the inventions--that same youtube channel has playlists with JS’s preludes.
I don’t even like Brahms (he bores me 💀 omg music nerds don’t come for me </3), but any of his orchestral pieces are probably good for studying.
Lmk if any of the links don’t work, and I can tell you what the piece was supposed to be lol.
Rebikov - The Devils are Amused, or Demons Having Fun
This would have been better if I shared it on October 1st, because seriously me waking up on October 1st is like Jack Skellington emerging from that town hall stew at the beginning of The Nightmare Before Christmas. But, in planning and spacing out my month long series of 13 spooky pieces for Halloween, I found this work on my list was so short and charming enough, I figured it would be a great little “prelude” for the month, an atmospheric piece, a quick impressionistic “The devils are amused” diabolic dance, by this lesser known Russian composer who did some experimentation with harmony after Tchaikovsky. This piece is from his suite, “Dreams”, and makes use of the whole tone scale, and its quick scampering waltz like mood are a perfect reminder that the leaves are turning and the sky is getting grey and Halloween is just around the corner
