A story about identity and equality with some really unique worldbuilding choices! Despite being short, this story covers so many themes, but most compelling is the protagonist figuring out who they are and how to be themselves despite the pressure around them. It has a forbidden romance! Multiple them/them characters! Fun allusions to mythology! A real lightbulb moment! (You know how sometimes you find the right pronoun for yourself and everything becomes really clear?) That scene where the protagonist finally finds their voice… fourteen-year-old me thought about that for AGES.

Do you like gay romance and grumpy x sunshine ships? Do you want to see a cute interracial love story between an idealistic scholar and a tough-minded activist? Try this media, relentlessly queer in its outlook, and with some intriguing larger themes as well. The way they meet is really memorable, and they reminisce about it a lot over the course of the story, which is pretty cute. There's a fair bit of politics as the scholar gets caught up in his boyfriend's struggle, and has to reexamine his worldview and commitment to nonviolence as he's confronted with the unfortunate realities of effecting real, lasting political change - with the boyfriend helping him along, of course! There's also some cool exploration of a number of POC cultures, commentary on the ethics of prisons, and last but not least, a sobering depiction of the excesses of colonialism and white arrogance. Oh yeah, and like… I'm just gonna say it… some REALLY hot on-screen action too, if you know what I mean. <3 Give it a try today, you won't regret it!
