Hey! I'm totally new to the BJD hobby and I have a question. I want to get a recast cause I don't have much money and would like to see if this is a hobby that fits me. What I'm worried about is if I send it to an artist for a face up or body blushing that they will be able to tell it's a recast and get angry with me. I guess my question is is it easy to tell between legit and recast?
Best advice?, never lie about your doll prior sending it to any faceup artist. Many have lost their dolls because they send it to a faceup artist that was a elitist anti recast (“pro artist”) community member, and when they told the artist that the doll was a recast (or the artist suspected, depending on the doll there are some metal plates, boxes or COAs “Certificated of Authenticity” with a specific registry number, etc), she decided to sell the doll (or head), destroy it, or to simply never send it back to the original owner. It’s hard to tell them apart in most cases (most cases, specially if you buy from a big well known store), but the faceup artist will always ask you questions and be on the fence and suspicious about the silliest mistake you make to use it as an excuse and you’ll loose your doll. So please don’t even try to do it, it will end badly if you lie.
If you can’t make your own faceups, and aren’t content with the price or options from the store, then try to use a recast friendly artist (more info click here).
Sending a doll to anyone it’s a risk to begin with (legit or recast, it might get lost or damage in the mail, might take forever to ship, might disappear into another dimension), I advice you to try and do your own faceups and body blushing, YouTube it’s filled with video tutorials of all sorts (even a Google search will do) and the materials are quite cheap to begin with (a couple watercolor pencils, a couple bottles of water based decorative acrylic paint, a couple chalk pastels colors, just be sure nothing has any oil in it {if you go for natural looks, the colors are usually: red, brown, black and white, you can get different variations of shades starting there}. And I say “a couple” because you actually don’t need an entire fancy box of 50 colors if you’re going to use only 2 or 3 colors to begin with. Water, some brushes, some paper towels, that’s the basic, then you decide how to seal the work depending on what products are selling on your area, MSC B-514 {Mister Super Clear MATT} , Winsor & Newton “professional matt varnish clear”, Testors Dullcote 1260, {”UV cut” might be available on any of this products but it’s completely optional}, or any other alternative “clear flat matte spray lacquer” aerosol {please ask on forums before you buy for more options I can’t think of any right now, this are the cans I have at hand but there are other brands I don’t use, and some that you shouldn’t use, but just to be sure ask on any recast friendly places FOR MORE INFO CLICK HERE}. So as you see you don’t need to spent a fortune or have a big professional assortment of stuff to begin with).
Hope any of this information it’s useful to you Anon. Let me know if you need further help.
