Red Eye Reviews - Handcuffs & Lace
(I took a picture of the cover cuz I didn't quite like the one on Fur Planet)
The amount of time it has taken me to read Handcuffs & Lace is criminal, especially for how short the book is. No really. I don't even remember when I got it, though I suppose if I went through my e-mailed shipping receipts I'd be able to find it. Combine that with the large amount of time that went into reading this book... well... let's just say that I'm a bit embarrassed. I mean, school and stuff had happened as well but damn. And it's not to say that H&L is a bad story, since that's not the case. So what is it? Handcuffs & Lace is the debut novella by Rechan, and it chronicals the exploits of one Cheyenne (or Vi as she's called in the story) while she finds herself a romantic prospect in Emersonthat lands in her jail cell. See, she's a corrections officer, and he's from out of town and little luck. Apparently he tried to proposition the wrong person and got caught. But he's kinda cute and one thing leads to another. The thing that strikes me most about H&L is how incredibly awkwardly real everything is. Vi has a bad hip from her years on the force. Emerson is a smoker. But their relationship advances in fits and starts, and they bring with them their various little insecurities and foibles. They are without a doubt real people, and with real people nothing ever goes perfectly. Despite, or perhaps because of that, it's a really touching romance novel that ends with crying. It's not sad, though. I would definitely recommend picking it up, if only to support Rechan for one, and for two to just enjoy a romance of imperfect parts that seem to make each other whole. Even if it's only for a little while.
