He's being so mean to her and for what. She's literally this thing
Current scene I'm writing in Challengers is pretty much "person who has had very poor sex education wakes up to find out that they've started their first period" except Vorta are sexless clones so instead it's "Cerin is growing fangs because Vorta are supposed to be venomous but all the other Vorta she knows have been defanged so she has zero context for it"
"Would you like a name?"
Resolve sputtered, hoping to the order of things that the phrasing of that question was accidental. Even the youngest drops could recite the Aspirant activation script from memory— none of them would know how to react if it was turned upon them. And besides, the Newly Ascended thought, I've already got one. It's not my fault Vanath is solid and can't know it. "Pardon?"
Vanath did what she was wont to do and kept talking. "You know. A name, that's not Founder or Newly Ascended or Most Divine." She pulled her hair back into a tight bun, as lab safety demanded. "After all—"
"The one I serve has instructed us to treat each other as equals," Resolve chorused, shifting into a fairly convincing facsimile of Vanath as they did. Then they adopted their own Vorta shape once again, and continued: "Why don't you just call me Tomaris if you're so concerned about that?"
"Because Tomaris was even worse at being a Vorta than you are at being a Founder," she said without a trace of humor. "I don't miss that disguise at all, and for what it's worth, I'm glad the one I serve convinced you to discard it."
Resolve shifted into a flowering shrub and rapidly wilted. Then, back to their usual standard form, all fluffy violet hair and catlike yellow eyes.
"So, what kind of name were you going to assign me?"
Vanath thought about it. Insufferable Brat comes to mind, she almost said. "I don't know. I was going to let you choose."
"Do I get a moment to think about it?"
"Sure."

For Dominion Week 8/26 - Striving for Perfection.
I love calling myself a character rehabilitator because to me being a fic writer and writing about badly written/underwritten/undeveloped characters really is like wildlife rehabilitation. Like I've got Byron from Babylon 5 sitting in a cat carrier a few feet away from me while I struggle to give Kilana a rabies shot
Breaking news: most straightlaced and by-the-book security officer in any Star Trek show goes back home to his even more straightlaced and by-the-book family, looks like a punk rock anarchist by comparison

Hopefully, this time, the story has a better ending.
we are the challengers of the unknown is a lot of things. it's a vehicle for all my dominion culture and religion headcanons. it's my way of taking star trek: picard season 3 out back and putting it down like a rabid dog. it's a story about resisting objectification, about family ties, about breaking cycles of abuse, about kindness in an environment that tries its hardest to make kindness impossible. it's a lament that the "odo raising a young member of a dominion species" arc wasn't a trilogy. it's a love letter to and radical re-envisioning of an aspect of canon that was underdeveloped at best and actively hostile to sympathetic portrayals at worst. it's a the last of us tribute. it's a meditation on resisting the idea that children are the property of their parents, as a parent. it's trusted companionship theory propaganda. it's me finally processing my grief about my dad and my lack of a real relationship with him. it's the first thing i've written in years that i've actually enjoyed writing, and it's something i hope you all enjoy just as much.
