Record Cleaning For The Soul
Record Cleaning For The Soul
Lately I’ve found a lot of comfort in cleaning my record collection. Maybe it’s just a distraction for a tired brain, or maybe it’s my anal-retentive, OCD tendencies up to their old tricks. Or possibly it’s just as simple as records need cleaned regardless of how shiny they look on the surface. Even those brand new slabs of wax can carry with them tiny particles within those grooves that cause…

Record Cleaning Processes
A record is just a plastic piece with grooves in it. You can wash it like any dish, even in a washing machine, by using any residential cleaning solutions and just water. However, you'll find convenient and cheap DIY record cleaning solutions online. https://chistoukraine.wordpress.com/2022/09/19/understanding-different-record-cleaning-processes/
I finished a project this afternoon that I’ve been wanting to try for some time now. To make my own version of the GroovMaster label saver. Only mine costs under 10 dollars!
Parts List:
PVC Insert x2 - $2.85 ¼ x 5" Screw - 85¢ Bag of Wing Nuts - 95¢ Adhesive back Foam - 99¢
The red shrink wrap on the screw, I already had. The same goes for the drill press I used for the holes in the PVC inserts, those were tough to get centered.
It fits perfectly over the label of an LP or a 45 and no water gets in!
The GroovMaster version sells for nearly 60 dollars. Their website tries to make it out to be more than it is, perhaps they think having “precision-machined” plastic discs makes them worth 50 bucks. Oh wait, it’s also see through, that’s where the last 10 comes from.
it’s a couple bits of plastic, it shouldn’t cost so much. 30 bucks tops, that’s what I’d have sold them for.
Anyway, the finished product works incredibly well! I’ll still try and tweak it of course, maybe find a rubber washer or gasket(?) to replace the foam.
Gah! No time tonight, gotta sleep. Till next time people!
(Maybe reblog me a little, please?)
10 Top Tips To Looking After Your Vinyl Collection
10 Top Tips To Looking After Your Vinyl Collection
Like anything delicate, fragile, treasured and expensive, Records need looking after. If you spend time and money on them like I do then you’ll want to protect them as best you can. A well looked after vinyl can last you almost a life time, as anyone lucky enough to be handed down their parents record collection will know, but only if properly stored and looked after. Here are the three main…

so many records...
WOW... I just got done washing todays haul. I'll just be for cutting my feet off now ><
Ok not really but I almost wish someone would, they hurt from standing there doing what I do to make them all sparkly. Lets not forget... some of todays finds were seriously nasty looking... I normally look at everything before walking out and there were like 5 of them that would not have normally passed the "wow that's not worth the effort" filter, but my cleaning solution does a HELL OF A JOB! Baring a physically damaged LP, I am way impressed with my results today.
The big surprise today? John Mayhall on the London label. Mental note... read the jacket before buying something I have no idea what is LOL. This is the paragraph at the top of the back of the jacket;
The recordings contained herein are not state-of-the-art stereophonic hi-fidelity. The performances were captured live on simple equipment, some at 3-3/4 IPS. NONE OF THE SIDES HAVE EVER BEEN AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC BEFORE; their current historical value transcends recording limitations.
Initially I was like what the hell is wrong with this thing which is what prompted me to read the jacket. Ahhhh!! Ok... some historic value, I can dig it. Actually pretty cool in that regard but difficult to listen to because the audio quality is really pretty lousy, but cool none the less. So it probably won't get played often but I can see myself pulling it out now and then.
I jokingly asked the owner if he would sell me stuff by weight ;) he laughed.
Here is the List of all the stuff I brought home today.
John Mayall - Primal Solos Boston - Boston Bryan Adams - Reckless Eddie Money - Eddie Money Billy Squire - Emotions in Motion Billy Squire - Don't Say No Eurythmics - Touch Bad Company - Desolation Angels Bonnie Raitt - Green Light Bonnie Raitt - Home Plate John Cougar Mellencamp - uh-huh John Cougar Mellencamp - Scarecrow Wang Chung - Points on the Curve Van Halen - 1984 Bryan Ferry - These Foolish Things Bryan Ferry - Another Time, Another Place The Romantics - In Heat The Fixx - React The Fixx - Phantoms The Fixx - Reach the Beach Steely Dan - Gaucho Steely Dan - The Royal Scam Fine Young Cannibals - Fine Young Cannibals
whew! and thus far... I haven't been disappointed with a single LP. I have played through a handful of them and started with the nastiest looking ones so I could sort them out but miraculously... everything has sounded awesome. The Van Halen will be a true test, that one looks like it's pretty scratched up so I'm expecting it to be noisy. I think one of the Steely Dan's has some heavy scratches too which is a shame but still, cost for these was 2.99 - 3.99 with the John Mayall the big spender at $7.99.
