The Record Store Date

Should we keep with the retro inspired date idea theme? Sure, why not! Like the previous week, for this idea we’re going to go way back....again. Simply put, you and your significant other will take a little trip to your local record store. Only there’s one small problem....there aren't a lot of record stores anymore. So, a warning before we get into this. You might have to scout out a record store if you want to try this idea out. Or substitute it with a CD store (like that makes it any easier). I know it might be tough if you don't know what you're looking for, but hey, finding it is half the fun right?

The Date

Have you found a local record store near you? You have? Thats great! Now go to it. For those of you who are unfamiliar with records, they're like giant CDs you play on a record player. Oh did I mention you're also going to need a record player for this? But hold on a moment before you write an angry comment. Collecting records is actually a really cool hobby, and starting a collection with your significant other could be something super fun! It can be a thrill going to your local store or garage sales, and seeing what you can find. Vinyl records are definitely an interesting (and dying) art, but well worth it. In fact, believe it or not records sound a lot better (from an audiophile perspective) than music streamed from your Spotifys or Apple Musics of the world. Plus its something physical, something you can display, and that's a feeling worth pursuing. Ok you two are in the record store, now what?

A Day at the Races

So this date idea comes in two parts. For the first part, you're just going to look at the records available. Maybe you found an album from a long lost artist you forgot about, or maybe you found something brand new! Its great to look for something you and your partner would genuinely like to add to your collection. However this wouldn't be Dates101 if there wasn't a little twist involved right?

You are going to buy an album for your partner, and visa versa. But... there's a catch. You aren't allowed to know the artist before hand, it has to be someone completely new. Which means, you have no idea what it’s going to sound like. Then, you must pick a record based on the album artwork, and nothing more. It could be the coolest looking album, the scariest, the weirdest, the most simple, the most green looking one, the one with the most people on it. Pick whatever category you want for this. Just know that you must pick a record based on that artwork category. Your partner does the same, with either the same category or something completely different. And of course you're gonna try and buy the album without your partner knowing what it looks like. When the two of you get home, set some time to listen to your new records! You could have just found your new favourite band, or it could be the worst thing you've ever heard. Either way, you've made a great memory out of it. Plus the record will be a fantastic conversation starter with friends.

Wrap Up

And that's the record store date. Record players themselves aren't very expensive (ok well kinda). But think of it as an investment, rather than a nuisance. Record collection is a lot of fun, and I personally do it. Plus, this could be a recurring date idea, say the 5th of every month is record store day. Make a tradition out of it, and keep the music alive.

Remember, make every date a story.
