Part 5 of The Voice of Stanix (Primax 1020.27 Iota),
Part 14 of All Hail Ravage
Summary (abbreviated):
I. Getaway stole the Lost Light, and nobody is happy about it except him.
II. The broken Matrix of Leadership was returned to Optimus before the war ended. It just woke up, and Optimus isn’t controlling it.
III. Mirage will do anything to get Hound back--even go utterly mad again. Or worse, make peace with his amica.
IV. Galvatron refuses to give up his claim to Decepticon leadership. If Ravage wants to be the leader of Destron entire, she'll have to cancel him the old-fashioned way: by killing him herself.
Content Advisory: Canon soup with IDW/G1 base. This series began as a Soundwave/Ravage MTMTE fix-it fic. Heavily seasoned with Japanese G1 and TFP. By now you should know what to expect from me. If you haven't read the first four fics in The Voice of Stanix, it begins with Diamonds & Rust.
Chapter Summary (not abbreviated): The Recaptains recaptain. Thunderclash picks a fight with Hound. Ravage makes Rodimus an offer he probably can’t refuse.
Content Advisory: Faint glimpses of victory? This chapter is not explicitly violent or sexual. There is nothing in this chapter that is likely to deter someone with triggers or squicks from enjoying it, and nothing that might appeal to any unusual kinks. Misfire does recall that someone on Sanctuary has been on suicide watch, but chooses not to discuss it.
However, this is when I remind you that I love Japanese G1, even though it’s incredibly silly sometimes. The IDW 2005 comics used Japanese G1 characters as plot devices without regard to their original personalities. In some cases, it explained JG1 canon incongruities or reduced the level of silliness; in others, it was nonsensical and sometimes offensive. I have thrown those latter characterisations right into Unicron’s maw along with everything else I refuse to have in my house.

Mild spoilers for the next chapter of Recovered Light. If you have started The Voice of Stanix but haven't finished the previous stories in the series, there are in fact spoilers for those fics as well, if you care about that. Some people very much don't and some people very much do, and the point of WIP Wednesday is that it's supposed to be from something I haven't posted yet, so:
You have been warned.
Also, if you're not familiar with a certain very explicit Cardi B song that Jazz is extremely fond of, you may not get the jokes. Ravage doesn't either at first, though. The initials are WAP; don't look it up if you don't like explicit language.
(I'm pretty sure Fowler does not like the song, and equally sure that he knows somebody who does. Probably one of the now-adult children he mentioned. His own, or those other three.)
you might like this: @jariktig (there have been slight edits) @bitegore @siadea @camp-mithril-lake @guesso13 @jack-my-star (I know you're not up to here yet but I think you won't care and will laugh your behind off)
Spoilers and inappropriate conversations below the cut!
(Ravage POV. If you are up to date on this fic, you know that Bill Fowler has rescued Soundblaster, who is, of course, Viridian aka Blackcat's brother.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Things are different now,” said Soundwave, before it could get more awkward.
“Indeed they are,” said Fowler. “So when are you coming to get your boy? We’ll want to wake him up before you get here.”
Viridian tensed, looking up at me sharply. She wanted him back at once, and she wanted to go with whoever went to Nevada to get him; so did I, but I knew the risk.
“We’ll get him back today,” I said. “We’ll send the W.A.P.—”
“The what?” Fowler looked at us as though he were shocked. “Did I mishear you?” I had no idea what he’d thought I’d said.
“The Weak Anthropic Principle,” Jazz explained, laughing; he understood what else the letters had meant that I didn’t. Soundwave must have understood it as well, because he covered his face. I wondered what they thought I would say if they shared it with me, but I gave them the side-eye and shrugged it off.
“It’s the ship that I came home from the Lost Light on,” I told Fowler. “Do you want them to come direct to the base in Nevada? The quicker we get off the line, and the quicker our ship gets in and out…the less likely it is that Thunderblast will notice we’ve got an encrypted connection going and tell Galvatron that she thinks we’re up to shenanigans.”
“I’ll send coordinates,” said Fowler.
“Thank you again; we are unbelievably grateful.” I sighed. There was a lot to do to prepare—like fixing his room up, for one thing.
“I’ve got kids. They’re all grown now, but I absolutely believe you. EDC out.”
Viridian jumped off my lap and headed off to her own room.
I started thinking about the logistics of adding Wingthing to the household; once she was fully manumitted, she would probably want to move out, but that would be a transition we couldn’t make until she and our son were ready for it. They’d both had a lot of shocks recently.
Soundwave and I had deliberated the optics and ethics of the issue, but the three of us had taken the larger habsuite the Housing Committee had offered us after Jazz had been with us for several months without incident. That meant that Viridian had a room of her own at the opposite end of the hab from the room that Soundwave and I shared (and also shared with Jazz most nights) and there was a room next to ours that Jazz recharged in when he chose to, instead of Viridian being in the tiny room that my birdsibs had shared before they moved out and Jazz having slept every night in our berth until Frenzy moved in with some new friends she’d made after deciding that she was a femme. There was another room across from Viridian’s, but only the one, and Wingthing would need to stay there as well…
I started writing up requisition forms for a recharge perch, and a few other things I thought Wingthing might need. Jazz was in the kitchen with Soundwave, who had been working a recipe out in his mind when they had gone in; he wanted to make something special for Soundblaster.
“C’mon, Princess, you know there’s some whores in this house,” Jazz said, giggling. “I can think of at least three.”
“Shut up,” Soundwave grumbled, but he was still laughing inside. And still keeping it under surface thought level. Was it really going to offend me? After living with Drift in Rodion, and the entirety of the Conclave in Kaon?
I looked up from the desk and into the kitchen. “So what was so funny? Come on, you two.”
“It wasn’t that funny,” said Soundwave, but he still made a snorting noise.
“It was funny!” Jazz protested. “When I told him that the phrase those letters refer to is one that I think of sometimes in connection with you…”
And there it was, because Soundwave couldn’t keep it off surface anymore. He had once heard Jazz sing the whole song at a karaoke bar, to the enthralled amusement and horrification of numerous humans who had been present at the time (and possibly hadn't known that Jazz has a valve just like everyone else).
I was almost offended, because some of the Autobots who had served on Earth had used that word (which also meant ‘cat’) to refer to me in a way I had really disliked…but I caught myself laughing, so I just threw a wadded up sheet of flimsy Viridian had left on my desk at them both.
{Gross.}
That was Viridian, reappearing from out of her room with a bag in her mouth. {Put these in Blast’s room.} She dropped it at Soundwave’s feet. {This is stuff that I knew he would like that I’ve saved for him.}
“You can do that,” I told her, but Soundwave did pick it up and go into the room with her.
I didn’t think anything of it when he came out of there shortly afterward all by himself, and neither did he. But we should’ve paid more attention when we went back in there with the stuff we’d requisitioned, and she wasn’t there. Her door was closed; we thought she was doing homework, or taking a nap.
Here's an excerpt from an upcoming chapter of Recovered Light.
This will be the second or third appearance of Soundblaster (I'd have to go look), who is the twin of Viridian (known as Blackcat to the Autobots) and the first appearance of Shadowsky, who is an actual OC.
Ravage and Soundwave have been looking for Soundblaster since they found out he exists, and they will be very annoyed when they find out about this.
“We need to get out of here,” Shadowsky grumbled. He was pacing, and his wings twitched, and he kept glancing around the room, not just at the door, but at the space under the desk, and the closed doors of the cabinets, and peering up over the light fixtures stuck to the ceiling.
Soundblaster sighed with his entire frame. He had never been so tired in his entire life. When Shadowsky looked like that, he wanted to hide. There was nowhere to hide in this room. And if Shadowsky couldn’t hide, he would do something stupid, something awesome, or occasionally something both stupid and awesome.
There was no point in arguing. Logic didn’t work on Shadowsky very well. Like Soundblaster, he had grown up under Onyx’s ‘care’, and Onyx had been a lot harder on Shadowsky.
“I don’t really want to leave,” said Soundblaster diffidently. “They let us have energon. I think they want to help us.” He didn’t really think Shadow would listen, but he knew if he spoke for himself alone, he could at least say he’d tried.
“That’s what they’d say if they wanted to trap us,” Shadowsky shot back. “They’re acting like we’re sparklings.”
Soundblaster looked up at him. “I don’t know if we’re sparklings,” he said, “but they probably do consider us minors. We’re not very old. Even if our sparks were taken and frozen millions of years ago, we haven’t been alive very long.”
“We’re old enough to know what we want,” Shadowsky replied. “And what I want is not to be here, waiting for people to make decisions about us without any input from us.”
“At least the chairs are comfortable,” said Soundblaster. “You could try sitting down on the one with no back.”
“I don’t think so.” Shadowsky was trying to fit himself between one of the light fixtures and the ceiling. But even though he was small for a Seeker, it wasn’t going to work. The room had probably been designed to keep people from getting on top of the lights and into the vents.
Soundblaster wouldn’t point that out. It would only make everything worse.
At least Shadowsky had accepted the fuel. After waiting to make sure that Soundblaster didn’t pass out, but since Shadowsky was always low on fuel, that was one less thing to worry about. It meant that he wouldn’t end up in a bulkhead…probably.
“If you warp out of here, I want you to leave me here. This is where I wanted to go,” said Soundblaster.
“You wanted to go to Sanctuary, not Europa Port,” Shadowsky countered.
“This is their Europa immigration office,” Soundblaster said patiently. “Those Belters whose shuttle you just warped us both right into were nice enough to leave us here, since they have charges against them on Sanctuary.” He sighed. “They weren’t wrong that it was a bad idea to stow away with them. They really could have sold us off to traffickers if they’d wanted to.”
Soundblaster frowned. “Well. They could’ve sold me.”
“I wouldn’t have let that happen,” said Shadowsky, who was now attempting to scrunch himself into the space on top of a datapad cabinet. “You just want to talk to Sardonyx.”
“Her name is Viridian, now.” Soundblaster tried not to sound too annoyed, but if their sister wanted to use another name, she had every right to do that. At least it wasn’t as stupid as Blackcat had been…for a green cat.
::Did you have to say that? They’re probably watching us and listening to everything that we say in here. I called her that for a reason. They probably don’t even know that was ever her name!::
Soundblaster wanted to see his twin sister again. He missed her terribly. He had for years: years in which he got older and somehow, she didn’t. And he desperately wanted to know why Enemy had been killed on Sanctuary, and why she’d done nothing to stop it. Enemy had been his friend, and he wasn’t sure how everything could have gone so wrong. It wasn’t like Viridian hadn’t known him before. What had she been so afraid of?
If he’d thought he could get away with saying, ‘take me at once to see Lady Viridian,’ he would’ve done it, and let Shadowsky grumble and stew all he wanted.
Two days ago, Soundblaster had lost his temper again. Onyx didn’t like it when he demanded to know where his sister had been all those years, or why it didn’t do anything about bringing her back, or Enemy being dead, or why it blamed him for the fact that Flipsides couldn’t go back to Sanctuary.
(Flipsides didn’t want to go back there anyway. She had taken up with some little blue jock named Eject. And Onyx had let her go, which didn’t make sense to Soundblaster either.)
Onyx had been surprisingly patient. It had allowed him to say everything that he’d wanted to say (and had said before) until he ran out of energy, watching him with its single serene yellow eye and not even trying to correct or dissuade him. And then, when Soundblaster had finally thought he might have got through, it had simply got up and walked out of the room as if nothing whatsoever had happened.
At least it hadn’t given him some corny lecture about the virtues of detachment or the dangerous seduction of emotional ties. It had just made him feel invisible.
Shortly thereafter, Shadowsky had fluttered down out of the rafters. Soundblaster hadn’t even known he was there. “I’m leaving. I’m not coming back. If you don’t come with me, you probably won’t ever see me again.”
Unless Onyx finds you somehow. Or you do something crazy and end up on the news. Because it’s so crazy it even gets broadcast out here.
But Soundblaster hadn’t been about to say no, and he certainly wouldn’t have let himself say even one of the words he’d been thinking. And Shadowsky had known that he wouldn’t say no. When Soundblaster had looked up at him, before he could even get a word out—vop! they were someplace else.
Soundblaster realised, as he recalled this, that Shadowsky had not actually said he would take him to Sanctuary. And that he was the one who had told the Belters they wanted to come here, not Shadowsky.
He didn’t bring it up. Arguing with Shadowsky only made everything worse. You couldn’t win a fight with Shadowsky. You could hurt him—Onyx had hurt him a lot—but you couldn’t win. Shadowsky hated to fight, though sometimes he tried. But even when he was terrified—even when he had been beaten or strapped to a table, or the circuits that made his limbs obey the commands of his brain had been broken, he didn’t give in.
Soundblaster had dragged his brother into the line for Sanctuary Station as soon as they’d entered the port, and Shadowsky had grudgingly let him at first. But then they had been pulled out of the customs line by mecha who spoke to them softly, with fields that were full of warmth and concern that made Soundblaster want to fall into their arms and tell them everything.
“They’re being nice to us,” Soundblaster said tentatively. “They didn’t even care that we don’t have any identification chips or documents.”
“If you spill your gears I really am going to leave you here,” Shadowsky said in a flat voice, his wings wrapped tightly around himself and his knees pulled all the way up to his chest, which only made him look even more like a sparkling.
::They’re only being nice to us because they think you look like Lord Soundwave. You should be glad I told them that’s just what cassette hosts all look like.::
Soundblaster frowned. He felt bad about Wingthing. She was a nice bat, and even though she wouldn’t starve as long as he kept himself fuelled while she was inside his chest, she would probably have appreciated the chance to drink some energon herself. “Why’d you tell ‘em I didn’t have any cassettes? It would be nice to let Wingthing out, don’t you think? We didn’t even ask her if she wanted to go.”
“Shut up,” said Shadowsky, rustling his wings in annoyance.
::Stop telling them stuff that’ll give away who you are! Anyhow, she’s better off here anyway. Anywhere’s better than there…and if you stay here, she probably won’t have to be a cassette anymore::
Soundblaster shook his head. “They didn’t even ask about your optics,” he pointed out. And if Wingthing minded being a cassette, she had never told him about that.
Shadowsky’s optics scared people, especially if they knew that they were a sign he’d been made to drink that nasty purple stuff that Onyx had given him as fuel during all the experiments. They were deep black voids with rings of cold purple light in them. Of course, the rest of him was dappled black and purple as well, with touches of blue in his gunmetal grey detailing. Nightbird had once said that Shadowsky was all of the colours of a storm.
“They asked where our adults were.” Shadowsky rolled his optics. “We don’t have guardians anymore. And I don’t want any. Nobody’s going to come looking for us here.”
Shadowsky’s expression had dared Soundblaster to contradict him. It was a dare that Soundblaster didn’t feel much like taking. Shadowsky wouldn’t hurt anyone if he didn’t have to, but he had ways of making his displeasure very clear. And the more Soundblaster thought about it, the clearer it was that Onyx could’ve found them if it had wanted to. Onyx had apparently been telling the truth when it said it didn’t actually care about any of them.
Soundblaster was sadly unsurprised that Onyx didn’t actually care about him. After all, it’d left Viridian in Kalis, to be found by the Autobots, and it hadn’t done anything even when the Autobots lost her. But Shadowsky was Onyx’s favourite experimental subject, and Onyx was just letting him go? It didn’t make sense.
“I mean it, Blast,” said Shadowsky, scowling. “I want out of here. Also, where in the Pit am I gonna fly around here?”
“They’re nice,” said Soundblaster, but even he had to admit that it sounded pathetic. “Adults can be nice, don’t you think? They’re nice to…our sister…here. They have an air force on Sanctuary. There are Seekers there. I’m sure there’s somewhere to fly…?”
Shadowsky rolled his optics. “They’re scared of me,” he said. “It’s in all of their fields. And they said they were gonna go talk to Howlback about us. She’s head of Security, everyone knows that. How do we know they’re not gonna lock us up?”
“I don’t think they do that here,” said Soundblaster, trying hard not to sound weak or, what was it Shadowsky always said? Gullible?
“Everywhere does that,” Shadowsky said.
Before Soundblaster could figure out what to say, the door opened, and two people came in, and Shadowsky freaked.
He swept down from the top of the file cabinet, hugged Soundblaster tight, and twisted the beams of the universe into a spiral that spat them out…on a whole other planet. While Soundblaster emptied his fuel tanks and burned all the green stuff growing out of the floor, Shadowsky hugged himself and looked around the place, weirdly satisfied. “Huh,” he said. “Onyx said I had range, but I really didn’t believe I could do this.”
Soundblaster stared at him in disbelief. What if they’d ended up inside a black hole? What was Shadowsky thinking? “I told you to leave me behind!” he protested. He couldn’t see any walls! Where were they?
“Don’t bother about it,” said Shadowsky.
“But I want to go back!” Soundblaster protested. “We left so I could see my sister!” he continued, stamping his pede on the aromatic and bizarrely crumbly surface of wherever they were.
“That’s why you left,” said Shadowsky. “You can go back to Sanctuary if you want to. I’m sure whoever’s in charge around here will be happy to send you there, so you can be Not Their Problem. I did what I could to keep you free, and if you just want to go back to a cage, I can’t stop you!”
Shadowsky’s fists were clenched, and his optics were blazing. Soundblaster never knew what to do or to say when he acted like this, and then, all of a sudden, his wings flared out.
“But I won’t go with you!” Shadowsky screamed. “I wanted out, and I’m not exchanging one cage for another, and I’m never going to lie down on anyone’s table again!”
There was a weird little rumble in the air. Soundblaster was used to hearing that when Shadow got mad. He was even used to the way there were suddenly shadows all round them and the air got hazy and weird. What he wasn’t used to was water, suddenly falling down out of the sky onto both of them.
That wasn’t good. It couldn’t be good. They were not supposed to get water inside of their frames. They had been told that many times. “What the frag did you do? We’re gonna get rusted!”
Shadowsky looked upward, and Soundblaster realised: all the rage had flowed out of his field. Instead, perhaps, his rage was pouring down out of the sky. With the water.
Shadowsky’s expression had completely changed. It was full of wonder and untarnished delight as he cupped his hands and let the water flow into and through his joints like an utter idiot. “I don’t know,” he said, awestruck. “But it’s kinda cool, don’t you think?”
There was a clap of thunder, and the rain came down harder, and Shadowsky twirled around like a bitlet, laughing—then leapt up into the sky, as if it weren’t totally stupid to fly through precipitation when you didn’t have to.
Soundblaster buried his face in his hands and sat down in the wet green mess and crumbly brown floor underneath them. He was so fragging tired. And Shadow was going to need energon soon. And so would Wingthing, and so would he. Where on this planet, wherever it was, would they find it?
...hey @bitegore, you think Dedication will want to be friends with this kid? hahahaha because I do
I decanonised the chapter of "Recovered Light" I posted last year because I don't like it. I was incredibly depressed when I wrote it, and it shows. I'm about to restart the fic with new chapters.
Have some Mirage.
Mirage knew the video of Getaway gloating about his mutiny was absolutely not a deepfake. In fact, he started to send a message to Prowl to make sure he knew, too, and then he decided not to, because he was sure that Prowl had something to do with it.
Jazz would never have chosen Getaway to be the lead on anything of importance.
Also, Jazz was probably a Decepticon, now. That was probably why he had not been involved.
Traitor. You knew what they did to me.
But if he thought about that, he’d become even angrier, and his fuel line pressure monitor would go off. If he was very lucky, First Aid would come into the room. If not, it would be someone who would demand to know why he was stressing himself when his mind was barely healed from whatever had caused the last round of hallucinatory episodes—and they wouldn’t have the clearance for him to explain it, so they’d be at a stalemate, and he’d probably end up being drugged.
Damn you, amicara Kytherion, and damn the fourteen different kisses I taught you, before you decided you no longer wanted to learn. And damn her too. I wanted to explain things to her, but she wouldn’t give me the time of day. And I don’t even think I can blame her for that. But she knows what she did. And so do you, Kytherion, amicara secerna.
The sight of Hound, standing aimlessly behind Getaway, made his spark ache.
Mirage should have been able to read his conjunx, even on video, where he would not, of course, be able to observe Hound’s field. He’d known Hound since they had been bitlets. (Just like Kit. But Kit was dead to them.)
Their relationship had always been deep, and while it had changed as they’d grown, and even after Mirage had discovered romantic love as a feeling, rather than as a performance, Hound had also been his first real friend.
(Except for Kit. Primus damn him to the clouds between worlds and the depths of the Pit. Kytherion was dead to him. Deader than all of the people that he and his…partner…had murdered.)
Mirage had known that there was a plan to depose the captains, although he couldn’t recall what his role in it must have been. Now he knew that everything had gone wrong. He would never have agreed to follow that idiot Getaway. He would have done things differently. Successfully. And he would never have left Hound behind.
Summary:
I. Getaway stole the Lost Light, and nobody is happy about it except him. Three planets died, but Megatron didn't, and nobody knows where Overlord is. Prowl's broken promise to the Galactic Council is going to have consequences, and Rodimus wants his ship back.
II. The broken Matrix of Leadership just woke up, and Optimus doesn't know what it’s doing, how, or why.
III. Mirage will do anything to get Hound back--even make peace with the amica of his youth: Soundwave.
IV. Galvatron refuses to give up his claim to Decepticon leadership. If Ravage wants to be the leader of Destron entire, she'll have to cancel him the old-fashioned way: by killing him herself. And the EDC would like her to do it as soon as possible.
Content Advisory: Canon soup with IDW/G1 base, heavily seasoned with Japanese G1 and TFP. This series began as a Soundwave/Ravage MTMTE fix-it fic. By now, I hope you know what to expect from me. The Voice of Stanix is a series of seven novel-length fics, and this is the fifth. It starts with Diamonds & Rust.
Chapter Summary: Chromedome and Rewind have a conversation about their future, which goes everywhere except where they probably hoped it would.
Content Advisory: Comparison and contrast of prewar Iaconian hierarchies, religious beliefs, cultural practises, and bigotries with similar social structures in prewar Urayan society. An incident in IDW canon involving Rewind’s abuse of illegally acquired footage of Overlord torturing Fortress Maximus is briefly mentioned, with no specific details of the torture discussed. Chromedome engages in something that might be gaslighting, but mostly of himself; any effects on Rewind outside of annoyance are (probably) spillover.
NOTE: I didn’t tag this as CD/RW because this is not the kind of thing I believe most CD/RW shippers would like. These are two people who are from very different universes and originally fell in love with different versions of each other than they are currently with, one of whom is obsessed with preserving all of the truth in the universe by obsessively recording it and the other of whom is known for having a habit of deleting memories that he deems too painful to handle at the end of every relationship. This is also the first time the two of them have fronted a chapter in this series, though I don’t know they won’t again...
Series: Part 5 of The Voice of Stanix (Primax 1020.27 Iota),
Part 14 of All Hail Ravage
Summary:
I. Getaway stole the Lost Light, and nobody is happy about it except him.
II. The broken Matrix of Leadership just woke up, and Optimus doesn’t know how, why, or what it’s doing.
III. Mirage will do anything to get Hound back; he might even have to make peace with his amica.
IV. Galvatron refuses to give up his claim to Decepticon leadership. If Ravage wants to be the leader of Destron entire, she’ll have to cancel him the old-fashioned way: by killing him herself. And the EDC would like her to do it as soon as possible.
Content Advisory: Canon soup with IDW/G1 base. This series began as a Soundwave/Ravage MTMTE fix-it fic. Heavily seasoned with Japanese G1 and TFP. Fourth fic in a series of seven. (The first one is Diamonds & Rust.)
Chapter Summary: Ravage comes home from the hospital. Viridian expresses her own concerns. Soundwave, Ravage and Jazz discuss sparklings. (Happy belated Christmas, ConCentric; I think this chapter’s exactly the thing you wanted.)
Content Advisory: Ravage discusses their history of war crimes. Soundwave has an extremely unpleasant theory regarding how Onyx got the sparks that it needed to make all of these sparklings. (Reproductive abuse, no details.)
