The Rundown on Rush
Coming in to college is a daunting experience. I worried over the most trivial things- if it’d be rude for me to ask to use the bathroom during class, if wearing a college sweatshirt would plaster a huge “freshman” sign on my back, if online tests were disguised as being easier than the traditional pen and paper to fool students- so, naturally I gravitated to an option that would give me a hundred other girls I could talk to. I decided to join a sorority.
I wanted a close knit group of people to rely on in order to make my campus seem smaller. After all, I attend a public university in the heart of a city with more students than my hometown. My college is a city of its own.
So, I took the first step and went through formal fall recruitment, or rush. It was a week of awkward small talk and a blur of faces and names. To make it more difficult, it seemed every girl I spoke to was a Madison or Emma (no hate to those with these names, they’re lovely- it’s just hard to keep track of who’s who when everyone has the same name). I stayed in the dorms while I spent a week going through 4 rounds- open house, house tours, philanthropy, and preference.
For two days, I suffered what is known as open house round. Essentially, you would travel to all of the chapter houses- at my college there was nearly 20- and you would speak to three different girls one on one for ten minutes each. Naturally, once I came upon the last few houses, I was sick of discussing the same things- where I’m from, what my major is, etc. Nevertheless, you could tell the active members where exhausted too. Everyone hates open house round, just know you’re not the only one.
After that, I was called back to 11 houses for house tour round, which again spanned over two days. This round entailed talking to one or two girls but also taking a look at their dining room, sleeping porches (if they have any), study rooms, etc. It was a lot more relaxed than the previous round and was much more fun. When I went through this round though, I focused on how easy the conversations with the girls came to me, not necessarily how nice the house was itself because, lets face it, a house can be drop dead gorgeous, but if you don’t feel comfortable with the other people that live there, you won’t be happy.
Halfway into the week, I entered philanthropy round with 7 houses inviting me back. This round was actually my favorite because it was only one day -woop!- and because at nearly every chapter, I had the opportunity to do a little craft that would be donated to their respective cause. I have always been an artsy girl so couple this with the opportunity to good for my community and I am a happy camper! Nearly all of the chapters had presentations on their charities and the coolest thing was that the vast majority of them were local! I loved hearing how some girls would volunteer over at the children’s hospital that was in walking distance of the chapter house and in general, I just felt like I saw a different side of the chapters with the philanthropy round. Others may argue house tours are their favorite but I would present a good argument for philanthropy round.
Finally, I got to preference day. Lucky for me, I was called back to my top three chapters- something that is definitely not common. Unfortunately, I saw too many girls crying from being dropped by their favorite houses or from not being called back to any at all. This sad reality was something I was not expecting. And what I really was not expecting was to be called back to my top three as I am a non-partier, old-soul and wasn’t sure how well I had resonated with these girls when I left their homes the day before. Anyway, rejection can be hard. I was dropped by several houses earlier on in the week, but I tried to keep and open mind and focused on the great things about the ones that actually wanted me. But anyways, preference round is a lot more personal. You meet up with a girl you have already talked to, eat some beautifully prepared food, listen to a couple songs performed by active sisters, and hear some heartfelt speeches. Lucky for me, my rush crush was the one that preffed me for one of the houses and I loved knowing that the good vibe I had gotten from her was mutual. Preference day should be the day where you really try to picture yourself living with these girls and how well you’d feel opening up to them, studying with them, and sharing your college experience with them.
Finally, came the time for me to decide between three house that I really loved. I actually ended up making a 180 right before making my decision. For a while, I thought for sure I would prioritize the house where my rush crush lived, but I went for the underdog house, where I felt like I hadn’t made a truly close connection with any of the girls but instead had good, relaxed conversations with everyone I talked to.
So the next day, I sat in a classroom, bid card in an envelope under my butt (we had to sit on them until all girls were there so we could open them together). It took quite a while but soon I heard a the noise of a bullhorn and before I knew it, I was tearing open my bid card. It was my underdog I had prioritized, and soon I ran to their room. Once there, I was surrounded by girls yelling and crying at how happy they were they had been chosen. A box full of our chapters bid day shirts flew open and in a mere couple of minutes everyone changed right there into the pastel yellow tank tops. We ended up running to our chapter home and once there we had a dance party.
I was exhausted by the end of this week, but little quiet, anxious me had finally accomplished something and whether I would enjoy myself in the sorority or not, I was proud at how far the week had brought me. I had met so many people and kept my cool. It was something I had never been close to experiencing before and something I don’t think I would want to experience again. But, it was a feeling of fulfillment and exhaustion at the end of the week and do not regret going through it whatsoever.
The recruitment survival kits I put together for both my Littles. Each one has their favorite treats and then a mini hairspray, a mini dry shampoo, a mini deodorant, a mini lint brush, band-aids chapstick, and Advil.
