 been thinking about the Outlast Trials, how Outlast went from a “you’re in an asylum filled with variants that want to kill you” to “you’re in the arizona desert and you’re going to walk on a pile of burnt child corpses and then get your dick chopped off by an axe wielding maniac while bodies swing from the trees and there’s buckets of entrails everywhere” and they were like “how do we top the gore and the scares with our next game” and they realized the only way to have extreme to the point of absurd gore was to create a situation where you’re a character in a video game that is themselves in a VR game where anything can happen in VR and such they can provide unlimited gore without the illusion of a sensical plot, so it’s like, fiction requires logic to be accepted by the audience, so they created a fiction logic such that the logic of the fiction services a secondary layer of fiction where logic can be abandoned. It’s crazy, it’s meta, it’s nuts, it’s wildly entertaining, it’s disgusting, it’s disturbing, it’s depraved, I'm captivated by it.

Because when you’ve created a reality where the guts and the gore are all simulated, you’ve abandoned the idea that the guts and the gore belong to real people with real lives, and you are now solely servicing the audience’s sadism and perverted appetite without also forcing them to acknowledge the price of that. You could argue that horror characters have always been disposable playthings, but we’ve now elevated it such that there are characters, and then there are literal disposable playthings within a simulation. It’s slasher beyond slasher, splatter beyond splatter. It’s an acknowledgement that we use these virtual spaces as a way to satisfy our need for a hyperreality, but it takes it a step further to have an explicit hyperreality that’s designed to very directly satisfy those needs, without the pretense of story/plot/characters/morals or overall point. And you could argue that a lot of films made are very flimsy when it comes to that pretense, but here it is explicitly abandoned. It points a figure at the audience that says “we know why you’re here, and we’re going to give it to you."
