Here the cut stems of Salix x sepulcralis 'Erythroflexuosa' (red twisted willow) have been used to create winter interest in this container. By late spring I suspect some of the twisted red stems may have rooted in the container so more plants maybe a bonus of the display. This small tree or large shrub can reach up to 5m tall.

The red stems of Cornus alba 'Sibirica' (Siberian dogwood) look great in this winter display border as they contrast with the groundcover of a golden leafed Carex (sedge) cultivar. This suckering deciduous shrub will produce a thicket of red stems, especially when growing in full sun. The new stems are most vibrant so once the plant is established the display benefits from the plants being cut back (coppiced) before ‘bud burst’ in spring.

The new stems of Cornus sericea 'Cardinal' (red osier dogwood) create bright thickets of yellow to orange-red stems. This suckering, deciduous shrub also provides autumn colour and will grow in most soil conditions in sun or partial shade.

This cultivar of Beta vulgaris subsp. cicla var. flavescens (Swiss chard) had dramatic red stems. This group of cultivated beets can produce an edible crop all year round and are known for their resistance to bolting (running to flower and seed). These plants were being grown on a ‘hugelkultur’ (hill culture) which is a no-dig raised bed filled with biomass (wood, leaves, cardboard and other compost) and finished with soil. This feature holds moisture, builds fertility and maximises the surface area.

It was only a few days ago I wrote about Iris 'Blue Note' (Reticulata) but my friend had such a lovely display of this small, early bulb, protected by a frame of Cornus alba (dogwood) stems, that here it is again!
