Troll or Derby by Red Tash

When her popular homecoming queen of a sister is kidnapped by a scuzzy drug dealer, Deb must flee the trailer park in which she's grown up, and rescue her. Along the way, Deb becomes enmeshed in the magical realm of trolls and fairies, and the blood-thirsty version of roller derby at which these beings excel. But spending too much time among the fairies comes with a price. Will Deb choose to save her sister, with the aid of a mysterious troll? Or will she be lost to the lures of roller derby, and the blonde temptress April, forever?

Review: I was super duper lucky enough to receive a copy of Troll or Derby for review from the author herself and couldn't wait to jump into a new world of Red's, late last year I won a copy of This Brilliant Darkness which I enjoyed, and upon starting Troll or Derby I was engulfed by her writing again, she is definitely one of those authors who has a style to her work I'm not sure I can pin it down to a certain thing or two, its just there. Anyhow the this story follows 15 year old Deb as she aims to save her more popular sister from a terrible "meth" lab fire, yes whilst her sister may be more popular, she's also gone and gotten herself mixed in with the wrong crowd - drug dealers. Oh but that is not the worst of it, they're trolls too! Could it be any worse? Well actually it can, she ends up being kidnapped by the trolls from hospital whilst Deb tries to warn her mother that her precious Gennifer is in hospital which doesn't go down smoothly at all. Needless to say the journey Deb takes only gets stranger and more magical the further she skates to the rescue of her sister, but what I liked the most was how there was never a dull moment on any page, the speed was constantly rising right up until the last word and I was so excited to know how it ended I stayed up late reading, passed out before finishing and woke up the next morning to find out I had three pages left, bad luck or what? The book also has alternating narratives as one chapters is by Deb, the next by Harlow - the loveliest Troll you'll ever meet - and so on and so forth, which was a great way to present the story as we got to see it from Deb's point of view who knew nothing about the magical realm and also from Harlow who was a lot more educated even if he didn't have the best of memory, he really helped to fill in the blanks. Such a brilliant quick short read that leaves on a lovely cliffhanger ready for the sequel which I have high hopes for and look forward to see certain characters develop - specifically Othello and Harlow some more. Recommend? Indeed! Rating: 4/5

Along the way, singing street people, cosplaying environmental activists, and heaven-sent beings come to populate the unique cityscape of Bloomington, IN, where encountering the bizarre is an everyday experience. Book one of a series. Not intended for children.

My review: I read this book a little while ago and it took me a while to complete as it was the first ebook I read and I kept forgetting I even owned a kindle. I won my ecopy of this book from a competition I entered on someone’s blog and the author even spoke to me afterwards and I promised her I’d review it too, so here it is, a few months late but better than never. I would also like to apologise before hand that I’m not the best with word and/or writing but I’ll try my hardest to get across my love for this book. I really really enjoyed reading this book and I loved all the characters, it was great because they all got developed well so even though there was a good amount of characters you could still easily tell one from the other. It was also really interesting seeing how they’re lives became engulfed in one and others and overall the mystery of everything that is going on - now this is why the book is difficult to review because I really don’t want to give anything away because there is so much happening at once that whilst you’re reading it you’re constantly asking yourself questions about what on earth is going on, did I mention there’s a dinosaur or two and electronics talking back to the main character? Seriously it’s crazy and a lot happens in such a short book. My all time favourite part was the ending, which I know sounds super bad but it ends on such a cliff-hanger you just DESPERATELY need the sequel in your hands instantly. Rating: 4/5 Recommend: YES! Sorry for not being better at putting my thoughts into words.

I'm currently reading a collection of shorty stories set around Christmas time and it's called Let It Snow by Red Tash and others. I'm 61% into it and not a single story has been boring yet. WOOO!
