At St. Michael’s Church in Edmund Thorpe, Leicestershire, there is a 17th century tomb for Sir Roger Smith, decorated with alabaster figures. A fault in the alabaster gave rise to a legend, that of Lady Ann Smith and her postmortem notoriety as a witch. The legend claimed that she could turn herself into a white cat and was once caught by the butler stealing meat. The butler wounded the cat’s paw in trying to catch it. Lady Ann later appeared with a bandaged wrist and a red scar was visible on her wrist from that time.  People believe it was for this reason the red vein appeared in her marble effigy.
