Reading rules(?)

For a hot second there I had a rule for myself that I wasn't allowed to buy a book--electronic or physical--unless I committed to starting it within 24 hours of purchase. Ideally within 8 hours.

This was because I'd identified a tendency in myself to buy books and then not read them.

This wasn't a perfect system. I had still accumulated a ton of books "to read." And I also started to make up fake rules for myself like "I couldn't get ANY new books until they were read." That is a fake rule because it stopped me from reading. Just like how "I can't read a new book until I finish this one" is a fake rule. Or "I need to read at least equal numbers of books in X genre as in Y genre." The point of "the rules" for me is to facilitate a more fulfilling relationship with reading. So rules that get in the way of that are fake rules

But anyway I might be bringing back a version of the 24 hour rule
