coming to mollys had become a routine by now, one that he enjoyed more than he cared to admit. working undercover was always a risk, for more reasons than one but his last time had led him to find gabby. while their short time had come to an end, he still viewed her as a friend. and one that he thought he knew pretty well by now.  ❛ yeah, i kind of figured that one myself. ❜  he laughed from the safe side of the counter. knowing gabby, his snarky comment wouldn’t be left unattended. he took a seat and crossed his arms over the counter.  ❛ but you have to elaborate now. what non wise decision have you made this time? ❜

an embarrassed look washed across kiran’s face, standing sheepishly at the apartment door. “oh uh —“ if only he’d had a decent excuse, or so he thought to himself. rather than attempt to justify it right away, he simply pulled the door back a little further. inside, just visible, was the glow of the television screen with a paused horror movie on it, popcorn strewn all over the floor. “i always did hate horror movies but I was told this one wasn’t too bad but…” he trailed off. “not cool, right?”

“can.i ask you something?” it was kind of a rarity for zola to get to spend time with her dad’s side of the family, at least other than her aunt amelia. given the fact that she was on her last year of med school, zola was being sent to a couple of different hospitals around the country to do a couple weeks of rounds. it was a way for med students to get a feel for what hospitals they wanted to apply to for their internship’s and honestly? what hospitals they didn’t want to go anywhere near. new york was the last on her list and instead of paying for housing for the time that she’d be there, her mom had suggested reaching out to her aunt kathleen to see if she could stay with family instead. even with the rarity of them spending time together, kathleen said yes. so there she was, sitting at the dinner table with her aunt that she didn’t know much about...even if she wanted to know a lot more. “what was my dad like when he was in med school?”

there was a heavy sigh as vivian looked over the puddle of coffee all over the kitchen floor, mug shattered into pieces. she’d been up most of the night, and this was the last straw when it came to her patience. taylor wasn’t making things any easier either. “you know what, i just really fancied tossing a mug of scalding hot coffee all over the floor.” the sarcasm heavy in her voice. “i didn’t exactly plan on this, did i? unless splash burns on your shins are in this season, then it was completely intentional and i’m trendy.”

“don’t,” he had heard her come in. he was packing up his stuff with - if addison asked, no real plan on where to go. of course he already had a job locked down, he was going to be the chief of neurosurgery down at a hospital in seattle. there were two interviews and a meeting with their chief. it was pretty quick which was good. “unless you’re here to help me pack my stuff, i don’t want to hear or care about anything else.” their life had changed so quickly. from the second he walked into their bedroom to see mark walk out of the bathroom to today, it felt like a year. most people would feel like their lives would be over, that their plans were changed and that the world wasn’t going to work out for them anymore. being cheated on by your wife? with your best friend? not only was mark his best friend, he was his best-man. he was his brother....and yet? a woman got in the way. his woman got in the way.

INT.  NEW AMSTERDAM EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT  —  DAY.

rolling her shoulders,  teddy leans,  propped up on her forearms,   against the nurse’s station in the bustling emergency department.  it’s only a moment before gaze lands on @redempticns​ and a contemplative smile settles across her lips.  there’s really something so nice about being back in new york,  setting any trepidation that may have been present aside.  it’s difficult,  sure,  but in a way...?  it really feels like coming home.

it’s all enough to prompt her to address the ED department chair,  a hand running through her hair.   “you know,  when i worked in seattle?  ha,  the emergency room was essentially run by surgeons.  interns and residents,  mostly,  with a single attending typically supervising.”

there’s a pause as she shakes her head,   “do you have any idea what that’s like?  a bunch of bloodthirsty little sharks circling,  looking for the best opportunities to scrub in on a surgery?  honestly,  to this day i wonder how a single goddamn thing was accomplished with that system in place.  i mean,  your style’s sort of...  organized chaos,  but at least patients who present with symptoms that aren’t so acute get the right sort of attention.”   her focus drifts around the emergency department before landing back on the other doctor,   “besides,  i think the world could use a little more organized chaos,”

“mr. barba,” it wasn’t every day that a lawyer walked through the doors of her office. usually, it was the other way around. she would have more information, papers signed, things like that to give any of them. “this is a surprise,” pen hit the wood of her desk, body leaning back into the fabric of her rolling desk chair. “is there something i can do for you or is this just a friendly hello?” she was smart enough to know that - in the world of rafael barba, things weren’t really ever just a friendly hello.
