Originally two of the highest members in Madam Toriel's mafia
Largely ‘enforcers’, though Sable ended up working his way to being the third-in-command, right behind Alphys
There was a lot he and Rus both didn’t like about their group, but protection was protection, power was power, and it was the only gropu strong enough to stand against the powerful human mafia that looked to traffic in monsters as well as liquor
Straw that broke the camels back: Madam Toriel revealed she’d been working on a ring for kidnapping/selling humans. Sable tried to dismantle it from the inside when arguing failed, but it wasn’t long before there was an ultimatum
Rus was barred from the HQ while Sable was getting instructed about his flawed thoughts - in the end, he broke in sneakily, stole his way through the building (occasionally taking out guards) and rescued his brother
They were on the lam then, from even their own people- all the while Rus is trying to nurse Sable back to health (broken leg, fractured arms, and more)
In the end they’re able to hunker down, but are discovered by a human -
the human ends up keeping their presence a secret, even brings them food & supplies & a change of clothes
(the human is poor themselves and in pretty bad circumstances, but they refuse to let the bros starve/go without basic needs, even though it puts them in hot water on more than one occasion)
the bros are distrustful but, well, gift horses ‘n all
(in the long run, they end up best friends, to say the least)
long road to recovery (cut off from magic food sources with the mob looking for them) and strategizing later, they end up making the difficult but stubborn decision to not flee the city-
rather, they look to establish their own group
It’s hard going, but within a year they’re secure enough to have their own place again, and even run their own speakeasy
Specialize in running both liquor and magic food, as well as secretive healthcare services
Sable’s the boss, Rus as right hand man, but they’re effectively partners in running it though they keep that on the DL. their ‘family’ consists of largely monsters, but also an increasing number of humans- including a lot of human women. Most of the humans in their group are women and gender-nonconforming folk, actually. And they’re viciously, proudly loyal.
Effectively a trifecta vying for power from the shadows in the city - the human mob(s), Toriel’s group, and now their’s - they have so far only carved out a small amount of territory, but each move is backed with countless hours of strategizing - and each foothold gained is just as firmly held
those in their district actually... end up, mostly liking it - certainly in comparison to others
in exchange for loyalty/lack of snitching on them, the bros & their mafia keep the streets clean, make sure they don’t take much at all in protection fees, even help rebuild whenever inevitable mob conflict causes local damage
Also rumor has it they have the best band of any of the speakeasies in town
... Rus definitely plays in it, he’s a huge draw whenever he does, nearly the whole place is dancing
It’s rare, but if you can catch Sable out on the dancefloor- he cuts a rug with the best of them, and has swept several people off their feet.
