The leaves of Epimedium × versicolor 'Sulphureum' (barrenwort) have taken on a red tint for the winter. This ground covering perennial will have delicate yellow flowers on wiry stems in the spring but for now the foliage forms a great contrast with ferns in this woodland border.

Succulent plants form an inspiring summer container display and are ideal for a warm, sunny site. This collection includes various Echeveria cultivars including Echeveria ‘Mauna Loa’ and Echeveria ‘Red Sea Monster’. These are rosette-forming evergreen plants which cope with neglect and drought.

Since mid April I have been recording this Vitis 'Frovit' (grape, syn. Vitis coignetiae ‘Claret Cloak’) coming into leaf. This is a vigorous, deciduous, climbing plant with tendrils and leaves that have a distinctly reddish colour when they are young. In addition, the foliage provides dramatic autumn colour and in winter the flaky-barked stems produce graphic lines trained along the wall. It responds well to pruning in the summer to reduce the new growth.

In a display of ornamental grasses on the Meadowgate Nursery stand at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Flower Show, Surrey, UK, a shoal of glass fishes swam between the red foliage of Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ (Japanese blood grass). The leaves gradually turn red as the season progresses and it is best planted in a sunny, open location. This deciduous grass is particularly effective planted with other grasses, or shown off in a container.
