Rufus's blood freezes.

The graphic depictions don't bother him. To be perfectly honest, he's seen worse, and written better than this. He’d never cared before.

The accusations had also never been true before.

This time, he will be the one lying when he denies having ever looked twice at Reno. And it will hurt, because Reno deserves to be looked at. And kissed. And wrecked in a manner similar to what was written but with infinitely more tenderness. Because Reno had found a way to soften all his edges and make him weak. And probably get them both killed for it.

Tseng. Tseng already knew about his feelings for Reno. He probably already knew about this tabloid, too. He pulled out his PHS. It would be fine. This was just like every other story written to drum up drama. No need to change the script now.

He wondered how Reno would react.

14. Forced Mutism

    Reno had a mouth on him; everyone around the Turk office could vouch for it. The only thing that was muffling his speech pattern now was gums and teeth lacquered with blood. To dilute his senses, they opted to blindfold him and bind his wrists. An easy tactic that would break a weaker man. For hours the torture was repeated, a question asked and a blow to the head sentenced when the tongue that was quick to rattle off vulgarities was silenced.     These men meant business. After surrounding the location that Rufus was last seen, they knew the President was within the walls of a building they had scoped out. They managed to separate one Turk, incapacitate another, and now only Reno remained with his face marked with just as much red as the mane that graced his hair. Rufus would have poised as a threat had they not been able to land a clean shot in his arm, the primary source of his power when it came to slinging his customized weapon from his company. They knew Rufus was an excellent marksman and proceeded with caution on cornering him.     They were at a race – their prize was no good dead.

“You look like you had a rough day,” she mentioned, setting a drink down in front of the redhead. “Where’s your other half?” 

The tone is teasing -- Reno rarely was on his own without Rude lingering somewhere nearby. Tifa couldn’t blame him since Reno was a grenade ready to go off at any moment most of the time.

Do you have a yard flamingo?

“For target practice, I found it at a garage sale.”

It isn’t clear why Tseng seems so proud of his thrift shopping efforts. Despite his love of birds he did at least have a sense of humour and the bizarre act of filling one’s lawn with flamingos was still novel enough for him to find his own purpose for the lawn ornament. Granted he didn’t have a lawn, but he did have a target range in what passed as a ‘yard’ in Midgar. 

Yards were for people in Kalm. Also he may have bought the flamingos in bulk... turns out they don’t last long against a semi-automatic rifle.

     “No... I think I had better stay.” Cloud folded his arms over his chest, mostly to give them something to do. “Look, I don’t need to hurt you. I only did before because I was being a ‘bodyguard’. Right now I want to help.” 

     He leaned against the wall and tried not to push him too much. He held up his hands to show he wasn’t trying anything funny. 

    “I get them too. Panic attacks.” Cloud told him, gently. “I never want anyone to see it, but most the time that makes it worse.” He came a little closer and stooped down. 

     “I didn’t expect to see you here until I found this.” He reached into his own belt and then extended his arm to show him his magrod. It was a little scratched up but still working fine. “I found this with a guard dog. I managed to beat it down until it fell unconscious, and this was in its jaws. I don’t know if this will help you feel better, but my sword is comforting to me. So I thought maybe...”

"..." Silently, without diverging his tinted gaze from the redhead, Rude grabs a mug, cracks one egg into that said mug... and pours newly brewed coffee in it.
