reader joins the avengers as a medic who goes with them for ops. bucky doesn’t like you at first, he doesn’t think that you’re good enough and you’ll jeopardise missions, so steve fakes a direct order from fury for bucky to be your probation coach. He will train you to be ‘fit’ for field ops (even though you were already top of your class and the best medic they’ve had). during a mission, you get injured to save bucky, and you both end up missing extraction because of it, leading to a night at a safe house in the middle of nowhere where there’s only one bed.

during his election campaign, bucky is the victim of an attempted assassination. being the winter soldier, he stopped it before the guy was able to draw his gun, but his campaign manager refused to continue if bucky didn’t let her assign him a bodyguard. this is where you come in. currently the head of a covert operations squad for the american military, and academy graduate of the same class as joaquin torres, you end up as bucky barnes’ personal bodyguard, not hanks to a favour you owe a certain captain america. you resent the job, as it’s pretty much redundant. but over time, bucky wins you over. just two weeks before thunderbolts*, you take a bullet for bucky during a drive by shooting and something changes between you both. fast forward to the gala, and it’s fair to say you’re not happy when bucky flirts with mel, so you fake a security breach to get bucky away from her, leading to a confrontation at his apartment.
