Rocking Chair #1

The Reed Hansuld Rocking Chair #1 is a really sublime pieces of work that oozes love of the design and craft process that comes with being a master craftsman.

Within this hard to figure chair, is a steel frame that is wrapped with walnut.  The design itself acts almost as a hand that rocks the chair backwards and forwards as it hugs the human form seated and wrapped in it.

Often said of lesser chairs and so called designer chairs, but this Rocking Chair #1 is a superb and exceptionally quality designer chair from a master furniture making of our time.

Hooray Mr Hansuld - wish I could afford to commission one!

Reed Hansuld is a custom furniture maker based in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn.  A self-admitted “slave to the form” he meticulously handcrafts customized, heirloom furniture pieces using both modern and traditional methods.  

I had the great pleasure of documenting Reed as he made his interpretation of the Hans Wegner valet chair. Says Reed, “When I first saw the Hans Wegner valet chair ,which would have been many years ago, I didn’t think much of it and didn’t really take the time to try to understand more about it.  I wasn’t overly wowed or impressed, in fact I thought it had some funny elements to it.  But... once I had to start designing this chair and realizing certain things about the requirements of the chair, I started realizing how smart the Hans Wegner design was.”
