Philip Whalen ‘51, Zen Buddhist poet of the Beat Generation, was the recipient of this calligraphed letter from Prof. Lloyd Reynolds. Fun fact: Whalen grew up in The Dalles, Oregon! #Repost @reedspecialcollections ・・・ A letter from Reed professor and calligrapher extraordinaire Lloyd Reynolds to poet Philip Whalen ‘51. You can see more of these letters at rdc.reed.edu, or visit the archives to see more work by both Reynolds and Whalen. #reedspecialcollections #reedlibrary #reedcollege #calligraphy #lloydreynolds #philipwhalen
#TBT: a Lloyd Reynolds datebook, written almost entirely in calligraphy! #Repost @reedspecialcollections ・・・ Lloyd Reynolds was an English, Creative writing, and Art instructor at Reed from 1929-1969. Reynolds learned calligraphy through personal research, and through his informal calligraphy classes influenced generations of Reed students, faculty and graphic artists. This datebook (all in calligraphy!) is one of many of Reynolds’s we have in the archives. #typetuesday #typography #reedspecialcollections #reedlibrary #lovereed #iglibraries #librariesofinstagram

Repost from @reedspecialcollections • Happy Black History Month! Today we'd like to share the pivotal work “The Afro-American Press and its Editors.” This work covers African-American newspapers and magazines published between 1827 and 1891 and even has a chapter on Black female journalists. We'll be sharing Black history materials every Monday and Wednesday of this month. Stay tuned! #reedspecialcollections #reedlibrary #archives #reedcollege #rarebooks #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #blacklivesmatter https://www.instagram.com/p/CKxL05fB5y0/?igshid=egi96gce6ku7

Repost from @reedspecialcollections • Today we present this a single leaf from the Qur'an written in Arabic in large Naskhi script with from the early 17th century. Written in a single column with 10 lines of text, it contains surah 42:24-36. If you want to learn how to do Arabic calligraphy, check out the Paideia class on Thursday (tomorrow)! Reed community members can log in to see the schedule via link in bio. #reedcollege #reedspecialcollections #reedlibrary #calligraphy #arabiccalligraphy #paideia #nashki https://www.instagram.com/p/B7pQygfBOci/?igshid=1q9i279vj9tg1
