28 days of Blackness Augustus Washington was an African American photographer and daguerreotypist born in 1820 Trenton New Jersey. Washington's father was an ex live and his mother was of Asian background. Washington was well-educated and studied " to elevate the social and political position of the oppressed and unfortunate people with whom I am identified". Augustus had a brief career as a teacher in Brooklyn until he moved to Hartford Connecticut in 1843 and open a daguerreotype studio to finance his education. By 1850 Washington was operating three Studios and was successfully attracting new clients. Washington reflected his political interest through his photography by taking portraits of local abolitionists. Tired with the inequality in America Washington went to Liberia in early 1853 where he became a school teacher, Farmer, Store proprietor and daguerreotypist.
