I'm currently switching between writing CogDiss and my Regency AU, but here's a snippet from the Regency:
The Lieutenant pressed his fingers to his temples, trying by all means to remain composed. As calmly as he could manage, he enquired "Did you at any point think to ask my opinion?"
"If I refused to take up the commission," retorted the Captain, "Your career would have been ruined. They would have done all in their power to make sure you never sailed again, nor would any business venture thrive."
"And this commission involves?"
"I am being sent to the Caribbean to combat piracy. For a period at least no less than six months."
"Leaving when?"
With a sigh of despair, knowing that the acceptance of his orders had effectively dashed all his dearest hopes of a triumphant return to England and claiming Lady Hannah's heart and hand, he replied, "I sail on the first tide tomorrow."

Regency AU sneak peek....
"So, Captain Tracy, if I read your letter aright, you wish to resign your commission and return to civilian life, yes?"
"Yes."
"No." replied the Admiral, a martial glint in his eye.
The Captain blinked, taken aback. "'No'? I do not comprehend."
Idly studying his nails, an expression of insouciance on his face, the Admiral remarked, "I believe 'No' is a sentence all by itself, am I obliged to expand upon it?"
"You expressed, Sir, that my ship would not be ready to sail for some months yet-"
"Indeed, and that is still the case. However-" the Admiral quickly ran on, anticipating an interruption from the Captain "We are receiving regular reports of piracy in Caribbean waters. We therefore have need of every available and able-bodied commander. Including yourself. For missions of at least 6 months' duration."
From the smug, self satisfied smile upon the Admiral's face, it appeared he took great delight in witnessing Captain Tracy's struggle to contain his emotion.
"And before you rashly refuse, consider this. Should you turn down this commission, or should you fail to complete it to the entire satisfaction of the Admiralty, I shall personally ensure that no employment, in whatever capacity, as undertakes either your brother the Lieutenant or you yourself, will prevail to any success. I will place in your way every obstacle, every restraint, every difficulty I can devise. Do we understand each other? "
