Do you think growing some fast hurts the Regenes? Would they get growing pains?
Bunny… I really, really wish that, for their sakes, it happened while they were ’sleeping.’
But I can’t imagine Step getting off so easily. They were born with telepathy. Depending on the stage the Boost kicked in, I imagine they felt everything as they were being ’born,’ their mind and awareness developing faster than their siblings thanks to the minds of their doctors being present.
The feeling of your body being ripped apart to grow new bones- breaking and snapping together as they fuse and lengthen. Organs, butting into each other, their fragile skin still not solidified, struggling to contain them all as they bulge out of their flesh. Muscles tearing to force new sinews into the body.
And then you have to Boost drug causing them unbearable pain…
There’s bound to be a good amount of risk associated with forced accelerated growth of a foetus to become 14 years old, so I can imagine a fair amount of Re-Genes having their issues. Chronic pain, spasms, ageing complications- even auto-immune diseases.
I just learned something! Sliver can turn your skin a grey blue color if it builds up in your body! Its stronger if you get exposed to sun light. It’s called Argyria!
So nanovores can be burnt. I wonder if we’re ever going to see that green fire throwing regene again because they would be really good against our nanovores. It would be cool if we got to see that regene team again.
Good thing that powers being bred isn't a thing. (Yet.)
Imagine if they could be. Some Re-Genes would be forced to become breeding slaves for the Farm...
But then again, maybe the staff wouldn't do that. It takes a lot of resources to raise a kid from baby to adulthood. It's canon that Re-Gene growth are sped up so they're decanted (or 'born') into their early teens.
Fallen hero spoilers. Disclaimer I’ve only recently played the Retribution demo a few times and don’t have access to author, tho I’ve joined their patron as a mid tier.
TW for discussing people as products, Human experiments.
Crack theory time! I think Regene DNA isn’t random, or bought off the desperate. I think it has specific sources. My theory: Regene DNA comes from villains, failed and dead heroes and soldiers.
My thoughts. The Boost shots is said to kill and cripple 95% of humans that take it. Not everyone’s body takes mods well. What does it take to survive? We don’t now (yet) but GeniTech might. And if it’s DNA, well it’s in the names.
My theory is that it takes a combination of the right genetics, epigenetics, health and environment to survive a boost shot. With mods you need the same and muscle strength and stamina.
According to the author Regenes take 2 years to grow to maturity or at least old enough to enchantments and use. Throwing away more then half a product that takes so long to “build” sounds like a bad business model. So, it would make more sense to try and stack the deck.
I imagine Regenes used for organ transplants would be cloned from people who didn’t have any organ problems. They would be kept health and given property nutrients the organs needed until they were ready to be used. Why not do the same with Regenes meant to be enhanced? Make clones from sources that have been known to handle mods or survive being boosted.
Some fun supporting facts I found
In Retribution Sidestep can point out Sunstreams disappearance and the MC ponders if she forced into the military or trapped in a lab. This suggests failed heroes end up drafted or experimented on.
The MC seems pretty sure of this. Why? Have they seen heroes dragged to the lab they grew up in?
Hollow Ground looks creepily like the MC.
The Hero Locus whom the MC considers framing in Rebirth disappeared.
It seems disappearing heroes isn’t uncommon.
Regenes are dyed blue and have their faces covered in distracting orange patterns. It makes them inhuman looking I imagine it would make a familiar face unrecognizable.
And then there’s the current USA prison system. We already have slavery labor and private prisons. I wouldn’t put it pass FEZ prisons to experiment on prisoners and sell their DNA.
If GeniTech could figure out what made people survive boosts and accept mods they could prime their Regenes to take mods and the boost and survive at a much higher rate. With clones from enhanced with know powers they could predict what powers would show up and which regenes would take mods well. Or at least compare how the clones turn out compared to the original and improve the survival rate. Considered the name of the company I imagine GeniTech does a lot of genetic research.
What happened to Sidestep might not be so different then what happens to other failed and lost heroes with no one to protect them.
Regenes needs to bathrooms too. Would they share with the staff or would there be separate bathroom for regenes? I bet regene bathrooms wouldn’t doors for stalls if they even have stall.
I’ve read some different interpretations of it. They’re always interesting and I hope to learn more about it in Retribution and book 3.
I tend to imagine the Farm as a mix of a institution and military services. A place where there’s strict hierarchy and authority. A lot of calling people numbers, Sir and titles. At the same time you’re not a person. You’re a living weapon, a danger a non person. And you wouldn’t be trusted to cut your own toe nails. I imagine regenes wouldn’t allowed to take care of themselves. Stuff that wouldn’t everyday stuff like brushing their teeth, would be done for/to them like maintenance on machine because that’s what you are there. I bet they wouldn’t even get to ask to go to the bathroom. There wouldn’t be assigned breaks that you hope your handler doesn’t forget or withhold as punishment.
