it was incredible.
i’m at KCACTF right now. yesterday, i auditioned for the concert play readings they put on and i was cast to read stage directions in one of the plays. we had a three hour rehearsal today and we’re performing tomorrow morning.
right off the bat, when i walked in 10 mins late from my professional audition, the director was referring to me as “he”. it wasn’t until she asked for my name and i told her that she corrected herself; except throughout the rehearsal she kept referring to me as “he” and then quickly correcting herself to “she”. i don’t think i have ever been misgendered so many times in such a short period.
but the thing that truly got me, was that she went down to the other side of the stage to ask another student from my school if I was a “he” or “she”. another of one of my friends sitting next to her quickly corrected her, saying my preferred pronouns were “they/them” (which she had only just found out yesterday so the fact she was that quick to pounce on it and correct her was absolutely amazing). but apparently that left her even more flustered and so the misgendering continued, to the point where even one of the other actors who I didn’t know, accidentally referred to me as “he” a couple times.
i’m going to spend my entire life being misgendered, especially when i’m as lowkey about it as i am. i’m fully aware of that.
what makes me furious is that she did not come to me, the person in question, and ask me. instead she chose to speak to another student from my school, someone who doesn’t even really know me, to get her answers. it reeks of disrespect and i am floored someone of her status, a teacher, a director, an adult in the arts would do that.
