Reguetón Rant.
I cannot put into words how much I fucking hate reguetón music and how much that genre and all those brainless pseudo performers have hurt Latin America’s perception for the rest of the world (as if we needed even more negative propaganda). They have reduced their women into submissive, plastic whores with absolutely no self respect towards their integrity or their own image. Those assholes sing about how they represent a culture and a race. First off, Latin America is the melting pot of cultures from around the world. It's not ONE culture, and it's not ONE race. Their original indigenous population has been practically exterminated one way or the other, the rest is a mix of a huge amount of races and cultures that makes them beautiful as a whole. So no, "Latin American" is not a motherfucking race, it is a term designed to classify the VAST variety of people who LIVE in the space called Latin America which has a rich and diverse origin, but I digress.
I REFUSE to be associated with reguetón, I REFUSE to be associated with those assholes, I REFUSE to be represented culturally by some people who don't even pronounce the R properly and their vocabulary consists only of "whore", "bling", "sex", "perrea", "mami" and the like. I'm not your "mami", (in fact, well spoken people here call "mami" their "mom", as in "Mamá", direct translation of "Mother". When and where the word "mami" was used as the spanish version of "babe" is a complete mystery for me, and the ones who started it should suffer a slow, horrible, painful death). I'm not anyone's whore, don't refer to me as an object.
Those people have made billions by insulting women and ridiculizing the population of a whole continent. And what's WORSE, if people weren't buying their stuff, weren't going to their concerts, downloading their songs and supporting them, they wouldn't exist, which means (and this is really scary) that people are supporting this denigration of women and culture, and most of them know this because they know all the lyrics by heart. Hypocrites.
YOU, yes, I'm talking to you, who dances to the (very monotonous) beat of the song that calls you an easy ugly bitch, are you stupid?!?! Have you ANY DIGNITY AT ALL???? WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!! Is that the image you want the rest of the world to have of you? I mean, this is more serious than people think. 6 years ago I thought (I hoped) it was just a phase, but as time passed by and I've seen this horrible crap receive worldwide attention, I am very upset and bothered for the perception other people will have about the place where I live and come from. I don't want them to think that the people who live here have only a couple of brain cells and are a lame and tropical version of a respected (although also highly ridiculized) genre such as rap. I don't want them to think that women here are plastic tan barbies who are trophies for drug dealers, kings which are highly respected public figures, and that's perfectly all right, perfectly normal and in fact a high achievement. NO! FUCKING NO! Wake up!!!!
This goes BEYOND hating crappy music. It's the fact that one of the biggest Latin American export is that horrible music that damages an already damaged international image, and that the people who are being directly affected by it don't care and keep on wasting their money on those assholes, because either they're stupid, or don't care, or don't think it affects them. WAKE UP. It does affect you, and if you want a change, if you want to be respected internationally as a Latin American (which is highly difficult) then start the motherfucking change. Don't wait until it's no longer "popular" and "cool".
Come on people. Listen to real music, with real meaning, with real melodies and real beats. There's A LOT of music to choose from, why settle with that crap? I assure you, there are few things as good as being completely mesmerized by music, by the feelings it can generate, to the places it can take you. Don't just "hear" music, LISTEN to it. Build a new future, I'm not over reacting.
People want to be machines. They want to act as told (even though they think they're rebels because they're sexually free and have no boundaries, as reguetón lyrics say). They are being taught NOT to feel, but to believe they are free because they think they have to power to choose. Please. It's the "pizza is a vegetable" dilemma all over again.
ART SAVES. MUSIC FREES.
And By the way, it's not "Reggaetón". It has absolutely nothing to do with the beautiful genre of Reggae that actually has rich, beautiful cultural and musical meaning.
And also please ignore all the grammar mistakes. English is not my native language. I'll write this in spanish another day because I'm busy and this was supposed to be a tiny rant, but my hatred towards this music goes far beyond, apparently.
