Psychoanalysis Sunday #11
Non-magical AU where Regulus is put in therapy with a psychoanalyst
Part 1 | Previous | Next
Regulus is sprawled across the sofa today, staring up at the ceiling slightly dazed. “I think I may perish immediately,” he sighs.
“That may be a touch hasty,” Dr. Robertson responds.
Regulus shakes his head and runs a hand through his hair distractedly. “I got my name wrong. My own name! The same one I have had since birth. I must have looked like a complete fool. Of course, Sirius thought it was hysterical. He has been calling me ‘Regular Black’ all week.”
“What did Mr. Moore think?”
Regulus groans and buries his face in his hands. “He called me adorable. And pinched my cheek. I have never been so humiliated. I shall never speak to the man again.”
“Because he thought you adorable?”
“I am not adorable,” Regulus says, crossing his arms and staring sternly at the analyst.
“Not ever?”
“I should hope not!”
“And why is that? What would it mean for you to be adorable?”
Regulus frowns, contemplating this, examining the feeling that bubbles up within him when he thinks of Bobby Moore laughing at him and calling him a “cute kid”. He can feel his face heat up at the recollection and squints his eyes shut. “It is embarrassing. It is beneath me.”
“Being adored is beneath you, Regular Black?”
Regulus’ eyes snap open. “Excuse me?”
Dr. Robertson grins. “You know, often slips of the tongue like that can reveal things about our subconscious mind.”
Regulus sighs heavily. “What does it say about me, then, that I called myself Regular? Deep down I consider myself painfully average?”
“Is that what you think?”
Regulus flops his arms out to the side. “Is it not your job to tell me these things?”
“You inadvertently introduced yourself Regular and then you tell me that you are never worthy of adoration. In my opinion, this certainly seems to point to a common theme for you.”
Regulus frowns. “You are being clever with words again. I do not like it.”
“I am simply interpreting what you are telling me.”
Regulus lets out an annoyed puff of air. “I think I could be great at football, perhaps,” he say suddenly. “It is no fun to play with Sirius, he cheats when he starts losing, but when I play at school I enjoy it. I am quite good, actually. Hopefully Moore retires soon, because I obviously can have no further interactions with him.”
“By all accounts you made a positive impression on him, Regulus. Yet you are determined to see it in a negative light.”
Regulus shook his head, frustrated. “I cannot see it that way. If it is true that I made a positive impression, why does it feel like I made an idiot out of myself?”
“Because you did make a bit of an idiot of yourself," the analyst admits. "But sometimes that can be charming.”
“Oh,” Regulus says, frowning slightly. “I suppose that is true. People do seem to find Sirius charming and he is constantly making an idiot of himself.”
“Your footballing dreams can live on, then?”
“Well, you will have to help me convince my mother. She says my body is made for better things.” Regulus sighs. “She is probably right.”
“Sport is good for the body. I will be sure to tell your parents that,” Dr. Robertson says, winking at Regulus.
Regulus’ face splits into a grin and he sits up on the couch, eyes lit up. "Let me tell you about the match..."
Gonna paint my nails for the first time in like a year. Place your bets on how fast it chips. I bet it won’t last the first hour of my shift tomorrow.

Top $ Raz is back with a brand new project called Regular Black, and it’s nine tracks full of themes to get down to. It’s been close to two years since his last major release, The New Flesh and he’s been hard at work behind it. To him, this is his most important album that he’s released. This is an album that addresses many issues that African Americans face like identity, culture, and more. Give it a listen, and pay attention to the lyrics behind the production of J57, Jeff Spec, Ten-O-Seven, and more. Purchase the album here, and shoutout to Throat Chop Music!
“Regular Black”, the term often used by African Americans unable to trace their roots past southern state lines, is a very important album for me. It’s more than just music, it’s my life, my culture, and my identity. It’s what I’ve been calling myself for many years now, and while making this album I realized there are many other folks like me that identify with the term.
